Did you see in the OP that the Superintendent intentionally did not fire those teachers whose evaluations were flawed? In other words, she seems to be on solid ground regarding those she did fire. They had the required evaluations. They flunked. They got fired.
I support this action wholeheartedly.
Not all were fired. I found the Washington posts article to be much more even sided.
I understand what the superintendent did, and why she did it.
However, before a procedure is done at my kids school, I'd want it tested before the entire school system adopts the procedure. Thats the main concern I would have if I was a DC parent at this point. Perhaps they did fire good teachers, no one knows for sure.
The performed poorly in this new evaluation system, but the evaluation system is in doubt at this point as well.
everyone should be a teacher. It appears to be the only job in America you cant get fired from
Why aim for keeping a job? Everyone should be a CEO. Get your retirement locked in for life before you ever step in an office, and the reward for bankrupting the company and getting fired is a golden parachute. Then you can run for political office. Much better deal. Too bad shareholders can't get those kinds of guarantees.
Would this be private sector, employees have the right to defend themselves. When it's a union, how dare they speak? Sorry, the hypocrisy is much. If the court finds the evaluation system to be flawed, teachers that are good won't be summarily fired and the system can be improved. If the court finds it to be correct, those teachers are history. Either way the interests of education are being served. If meritocracy is being restored, why so afraid of due process?

Context is key. Washington DC unions have been fighting the "performance based" system for several decades. Only now have they finally ran headfirst into a mayor and a school superintendent that will thumb their noses at the unions for the betterment of the education system.
You seem to favor the very approach that has plagued the DC school system for decades. The courts are the unions favorite respite, and they abuse it willingly. Why do you believe that unions have the answers when the only results have been negative results at the behest of their crying and whining? Why do you favor the same failed approach?
Of course it isn't surprising! Unions are required by law to represent their members on any issue arising from the conditions of their employment!
Even when they aren't doing their job.
And Obama is all for unions, solidly in their corner, building them up any way he can (e.g. helping the public schools by eliminating vouchers, so fewer kids can get a decent education).
Don't you just love the way he can relate to us common folk?
Why do you think that so many young people nowadays go into that? Because they can't get fired and they get high salaries for 8 months of work and summers off. It is a cake job.
High salary? 8 months of work? Here in Vegas (Clark County School District) starting teachers make 36K a year while working from mid August to mid June. 36K is not a high salary, and I will save you the trouble, mid August to mid June is 10 months.
