Wouldn't this be a better question to ask blacks? Not many whites will admit to treating people of different skin tones differently.

not just whites. hispanics and asians, as well. i figured they'd answer honestly as long as they were able to remain anonymous (thru the poll)

i agree that it is an issue in the black community, but that is a WHOLE OTHER topic. right now my interest is focused on the opinions of non-blacks

The person who quoted me misunderstood. As a light-skinned black person, I have had a number of white people profess racist thoughts to me because they thought I was mixed and therefore "one of the good ones". It definitely influences how whites act around me.

Growing up in New Orleans with its highly complex stratification of African Americans based upon skin color which assigned privileges and awards based upon complexion alone. As a result, the practice built into the minds of some folks either a sense of arrogance or resentment, depending where you fell on the paper bag test. For the most part all that nonsense came to a screeching halt during the late 60's but even still the legacy of slavery and racism that nurtured it die hard.

PS - in my family the color range went from high yellow to urple, so I got to witness the before and after close up and personal.

My grandmother had the opportunity on many an occasion since many mistook her for white.

I once herd a white lady, on TV, imply that Obama's smarts come from his white side. She did not say it like that, of course. What she actually said was more like "he thanks he is smart cause he got a half white brain". It was during the primary in Kentucky.

Racism is essentially a belief in racial superiority, with blacks being rated as the lowest. Assuming that whites realize that light skin usually comes from mixture with different races, including white, a mixed black would be viewed, subconsciously if not consciously, as superior to the darker...hence less racialy mixed black person. Therefore, they may feel that a light skinned black person will be closer to "white" and hence "superior" than a dark skinned person and they maybe treated better than they would treat a dark skinned black person, but still not on par in the way they would treat a white person.

I'm white and colorblind to skintone. No, I'm not being PC, I just grew up in a predominantly black lower-middle class neighborhood. I never saw a difference in black, white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, etc.
