Yeah, right! They may be raising the retirement age, but it's still lower than the present retirement age in the US.

Sarkozy follows Europe in raising retirement age - Europe, World - The Independent

The French, who have the youngest retirement age in Europe, will soon have to work longer to qualify for a full state pension. As unions called a nationwide strike to defend pension rights today, the government said that France could no longer afford the retirement age of 60 – for both men and women – which has existed since 1982.

Pension Reform: Europe Wants Later Retirements - BusinessWeek

President Nicolas Sarkozy wants to raise France's retirement age from 60 to 62 as he grapples with a soaring deficit.

Greeks who have worked 35 years can get a full pension at 58 despite an official retirement age of 65.

Default Just a matter of time

I don't care WHO is in the White House....raising the SS retirement age to 70 is just a matter of time. Bush cuts, no Bush cuts, doesn't matter. You simply can't fund the onslaught of soon-to-be retirees over the next dozen years or so....just can't.

As far as the war, well, we can either pay $5 gallon or more or shadddyup about it already....the same people biotching are going to be the same ones biotching about the price of gas and why they can't drive a subsidized Escalade they can no longer fuel.....laughable....

IF you think this is a problem have you really, really tried to break down the pending cost of Medicare/Medicaid? Whoa.....oil shieks don't have enough money to foot that deal.....

Sooner or later, despite who is in the White House, we are going to have to face these obligations....

Result?

My predictions

SS retirement age will gradually be moved to 70 or 72 over the next 20 years

Those who are 45-57 now will be screwed the most later on SS.....

SS as you and I know it will end up being the tax that was collected without firing a shot, to shore up everything else. Started with Johnson, he borrowed from it first and every President since has leaned on that feedbag.....never going to end....

Medicare/Medicaid will slide away from you faster than your first prom date at sunrise....

HMO's will be all the rage......again.....

Lawsuits against said HMO's will be all the rage.....again....

Your retirement funds will be taxed. NO way around that now....

Hybrids will continue to evolve. Taxes on fuel will rise offsetting any perceived savings you thought you were going to get by buying one. Why? Well, if you, me, we start using less fuel, taxes will be reduced in line with the reduced consumption. Result? Raise the taxes higher to offset the loss in tax revenue. Result? You buy a Hybrid and the only thing you did was shift your savings to the Government in the form of higher fuel taxes.....Result? You ultimately didn't save a dime but, you did do wonders for the State and Federal Government bodies....Result? It's the slickest tax hike in history and we lined up, literally, at the pump to pay for it....amazing....

Government will finally shrink some of it's bloated staffing. Not because it's the right thing to do but rather, there will simply not be enough people paying enough taxes to keep feeding that monster. I think we are just about at the point where the scales have tipped to the side where there are more have nots, than have's......when that happens, the have nots will continue to demand their share until the other side simply can no longer afford to do so.....kind of like BO's election....

Government workers will be despised almost as much as folks who wear robes, run 7/11's and basically manage the taxi's throughout the greater metropolitan areas you and I call; "home"....

Government jobs will finally be considered a "growth industry".....

Mexico will be a desirable place to retire simply because you will be able to afford it. It's that or move on out to Wyoming, Eastern Idaho, or southern Mississippi, or Western Alabama.....your call.....

Gambling will be legal in all 50 states......

Lotto Tickets will be considered, a retirement strategy.....

Americans will finally realize, you can't save the Snail Darter, every benefit is not really free, and sobriety comes in many, many forms.

Hope this helps....because I "care"....about what? I have no idea....

What happens if people physically can't work to age 70 to keep up with management demands/expectations? What about illnesses? Those of us on the bottom have to keep working longer and longer with stagnant wages while the salaries of the super rich keep going up. Sounds like just another way the nation should be subservient to the wealthy and elite.

Boehner is just another capital hill moron out of touch with how things work in the real world.

Because of the productivity craze. I read that in Europe, where there is an odd discussion on why governments are supposed to lure Indian and Chinese engineers and developers to Europe when at the same time there are hundreds of thousands of qualified European engineers without work, companies say that they don't want to hire 40+ year old engineers because their productivity and creativity are said to be lower than those of 25 year olds. Also they argue that over 40 many people have families, which distracts them from their jobs Talk about priorities in life...

You know, I heard they have a way of determining if someone will get Alzheimer Disease. The first sign of it starting, is when ones face turns orange.

and why would you think that is fair? If you want them to pay more, up the amount they will recieve at retirement age. Right now there is a cap on SS benefits, most who are middle income bet the max if they wait til they are 65 to collect? If one retires at 65 and is earning $50,000 at retirement, are you saying he should get the same SS check as the person who retires making $100,000 or more a year, but the person making $100,000 should pay in more? Talk about the plan be totally a form of socialism? Wow...

sorry, I happen to agree, it will and needs to be raised. What about people now, who can't work til they are 65 or 67? It is the same principle.

FDR put SS into place, thinking the average retiree would draw for about 2 or 3 years. It was meant to help, not support seniors. It isn't a welfare program but an insurance program. Are you aware how many people in their 70s and even 80s are still working? Do you think there are many who are in the late 60s who could not continue to work a few more years? do you think people who are 65 in todays world just sit around and wait to die like they did 75 years ago? of course not, most people in their 70s are as young as people in their 50s a couple of decades ago.

As you put it, those at the bottom will have to continue working, yes, and many do. There are people who didn't plan for retirement as well as they should have or are unlucky enough to work for companies that offer no retirement plans, well guess what? That has always been the case. The government isn't in business to support those people, whether it be you or me. If I can't support myself in my advanced years, who's fault it that? It isn't Uncle Sams.

Thumbs down John Boner

Oh, we get it now Boehner, we get to retire later to pay for extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich. Why didn't you just say so?

That's right, Boner...

Put the burden on the middle/working class. Billionaires in America have got it tough.
