It's just means neither party was a clear choice..... not sure what you mean by hyper polarized - I don't see any correlation between the USA and Australia re election results.
I've lived in Australia for two months now. My impression is that Australians aren't nearly as partisan as they are in the U.S. Rather, they seem to have great disdain for both parties. If an Aussie criticises Labour, never expect him/her to also love the Liberals, or vice versa. The general consensus seems to be that neither party deserves to govern.
Please- Go to Belgium. The French- Dutch divide is paralyzing the nation.
The simple solution is to divide the nation into Wallonia and Flemland or whatever the two groups call their lands. Its late, and I can't remember right now. Truthfully that's the easy answer to any situation where a democratic country faces protracted regional animosity.
Its always been that way. Even the british parliment is is common for teh PM to be booed. Actaully congress is very clivl espeacily the country where their assemblies end up in fist to cuffs.

That won't happen because then that would mean the EUSSR, sorry I mean the EU, Project will be a failure. If one country can't keep 2 separate cultural groups united without so much infighting, what hope is there for 20+ different groups? What most, if not all, liberals fail to understand is that humans need borders, language, and culture. Just like in sports people go crazy rooting for their chosen team and in international sport, people root for their own country with passion. Isn't it funny that the one person who lead the clarion call for borders to be erased across the world and uniting everyone under one government was none other than Karl Marx? Hitler tried to do the same thing, unite Europe under the Nazi flag, and Lenin tried to do the same by uniting everyone under the hammer and sickle. A nation needs borders, a language, and a culture to survive.
It's not really a big deal. It just means that neither party has won enough seats, to claim victrory and will usually result in a minority/coalition government.
