It took a few years.

Quote:
Ten years after Vietnam's stock exchange began, it's become a symbol of what the country is trying to achieve but has yet to fully realize: a market-based economy. In this communist nation, the stock market is seen as the ultimate symbol of capitalism, because people have the freedom to choose their own financial fates, for good or bad, through their investments.

The stock market has grown significantly...

The US military won every battle in Vietnam. It was the communist-left in America (Walter Cronkite) that lost the war.

Perhaps you missed the tanks and soldiers from North Viet Nam that invaded the south and forced it to join the north....

Self determination....

"I Guess America Eventually Won Vietnam"

More like American fought a war with 55,000 deaths to wind up at the same place they would have wound up had they not fought the war in the first place.

The Vietnamese will always be the winner since their sole objective was to throw off colonial rule, and to reunite their country. For the CPV, a Marxist state was never a key objective.

Free of American influence? And absent of US influence during the Cold War, what happens? The country is scooped up by the Soviets. Without the USSR, communist countries like Vietnam are left on their own with no support from the west. Now that Vietnam has made a move towards friendlier relations and a market economy they hope to restore the support of the west and once again have the backing of a superpower such as the US.

South Vietnam lost 250,000 troops trying to "determine their own future" free of Communist influence.

It is interesting that Americans won their independence in pretty much in the same manner as the Vietnamese did, sans Cronkite of course.

Perhaps you missed the fact that the people in South Viet Nam did not support their own corrupt government. Perhaps you missed the fact there has been no dispute amongst the Vietnamese people when they united North and South Vietnam.

The Viet Nam was a bright shining lie that cost the lives of 58,000 U.S service personelly .We attempted to prop up a corrupt governemnt in an attempt to influence an internat struggle in another country. (Sound familiar) It didn't work because the government in power didn't have the support of the people.

Perhaps you missed the fact for the past 35 years the people of Viet Nam have had a relatively peaceful country.

The moral of this story is that the way to defeat communism and totalitarianism is through economic development and not military force. Once people taste the benefits of capitalism they always want more. We should take note with regard to our policy towards Cuba.

The South Vietnamese troops were the pawns of a corrupt government that did not have the needs of the population of South Viet Nam as its primary interest. They were propped up by the United States. As soon as the U.S left and U.S aid dried up they fell like axed tree in a forest.

Rule #1 in a counterinsurgency war. If you don't have the support of the people you can't win.
