Well, those endlessly wring their hands over the nanny-state certainly should. If they have any consistency, that is...

Prostitution is heavily regulated in Europe. Perhaps governments here, in their search for new revenue streams, will take a look at legalizing it for the sake of taxation. I think it's happening right now with medical marijuana.

There is actually a schism in the feminist movement regarding this issue. There are many feminists who oppose prostitution because they see it as exploitation. However, other feminists point to the existence of male prostitutes to rebut the argument of gender exploitation, and see it as a straightforward transaction. EVERYONE of course is opposed to coerced prostitution. Including Europeans.

I will try.

Men have always and will always hire prostitutes. Such an agreement is between two consenting adults or, in economic terms, a buyer and seller making a market. Crime results from pimps, mafiosos, and smugglers who capitalize on the fact that is illegal. Make it legal, and you remove a great deal, although not all, of the criminal element. Pimping remains illegal in Europe.

Also, by regulating it, you bring it out of the shadows. This has the aforementioned benefit of reducing crime. But it also enables the women to get health checks and even contribute to pensions.

Making it legal is not akin to saying its a great thing. Its merely being, as I said, realistic. If its inevitable, better that its negative impact is controlled and reduced.

US is big on morality - however fake it may be. In general, no politician can run on legalizing prostitution and hope to win. Legalizing it will probably make things safer for women involved, allow for STD testing, and allow collection of taxes for the er..."service".

Yes.

And one of those two groups features a lot of people whining nanny-state! endlessly. Except, of course, when they hypocritically support nanny-statism.

I bet you can guess which of those two groups is full of people who whine nanny-state! and yet support nanny-statism when it comes to prostitution laws...
