Some electrical appliances hog more energy than others. According to Con Edison, air conditioners, dishwashers, and flat screen TVs are some of the worst offenders. "Maybe wait to do your laundry," Olert suggested.

Well, you have to do dishes, and a dishwasher generally uses less water than washing by hand. You can turn off the high-temp cycles and just let the water from your water heater, which may be gas-fired anyway, do the job. The energy to run the machine is not so much. Run full loads.
Some people will need to do laundry, too. Running the washer itself doesn't use too much energy. It's the water heating, which works as above. An electric dryer uses a lot of energy. Maybe a clothesline would work?
Also, if you must use a vibrator during this heatwave, please make sure it's a battery-powered one. I know it's a sacrifice, but think of the children!

The heck with that nonsense. I'm putting my central air on 69 degrees and running every appliance in the house over and over. The hell with everyone who likes to complain when its hot and tells me to cut back. Let's build a couple more power stations in the NYC area and quit buying overpriced juice from Canada.
OK, shoulda read the link first. It doesn't make much sense to list air conditioners, dishwashers, and flat screen TVs, and then tell people not to use a clothes washer. I still think most of the energy usage in a DW is heating the water for the high-temp cycles, and the drying cycles. So turn those off. Maybe read a book instead of watching TV.

Damn straight. It's my right as an American to use as much energy as I want! Conservation is a mushy, touchy-feely liberal idea - and it's un-American. Dick Cheney said so a few years ago.

I'm attempting to cut back usage because the thought of a power outage has been in the back of my mind since this horrible weather started. I heard on the radio that the average American has 35 gadgets and appliances plugged in on a regular basis. That's crazy and I certainly don't. I would hate to have the fridge not working...I just went shopping.

Nothing like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Damn right. And I hope I blow out your AC tonight along with every other liberal in this NIMBY blue state. Maybe you will actually suggest to your representative it's time for some new power plants in the area.
They always come out and say this every time we have a heat wave. So what's going to happen when GM comes out with the Volt? I guess everyone will have to leave their cars at work and walk home because there won't be enough power to juice them back up.
