In another thread, a poster asked "How can any woman vote for Obama?", and it got me thinking, neither side represents the best interest for all americans or for most americans. I'm a democrat, but I would never a tell a CEO of a fortune 500 company or some guy who makes a million dollars a year from investments to vote for democrat, we'll just try to tax the crap out of you. I would never tell a gay man, single woman or minority, to vote for republicans, because if they had it their way, it would 1950 again, and we know how that worked out for us. Why can't we just except that republicans have their people, and we have our people? Look how this election is going to play out, if obama wins, it will be because he got 80% of the minorities and single women, and if Romney wins, it will because he dominated with the white vote.

One answer: Distrust of partisanship lies deep in the bones of American republicanism (note the small R) because unlike constitutional monarchies (where national loyalty is focused on the sovereign) or European republics (where ethnic identity - "la nation" - partially replaces a monarch as focus of loyalty), the United States has nothing but the concept of republicanism itself. And the great enemy of republican virtue, as both the ancients and the Founding Fathers knew very well, is faction. Therefore, we yearn for a virtuous and united republic, even while we know it can never be.

I agree with you 100%, I do not see the need for all the partisan name-calling. If you enjoy sitting on your ass and collecting a government check you should vote Democrat.

First, politics is about representing the interests of various groups. That is the essence of all politics and government. The conservative lie that they represent the general interests of all American citizens without paying attention to groups is just nonsense and illogical.

Now I do find it funny that you'd tell a CEO of a fortune 500 company not to vote for Democrats, I think CEO's of big corporations do better under Democratic presidents and certainly the leadership of the Democratic party is dominated by rich white dudes with connections to banks and corporations. This is objective reality.
