A day ahead of the government’s report on the jobs market for February, the Labor Department said thatfirst-time claims for unemployment benefits dropped to 368,000, the lowest level since May 2008. Economists had expected a rise to 398,000 claims.
The four-week average for applications, a less volatile figure, fell to 388,500, its lowest level since July 2008.
As the total number of full-time workers decreases, a constant rate of job losses among that smaller group of worker will still result in a lower number of new jobless claims simply because it applies to fewer workers.
A lower number of first-time jobless claims does not equal an increase in total employment or and increase in the employment rate.
