Something that will annoy the types who flaunt just how much they care...

The cover of The American Scholar quarterly carries an impertinent assertion: “The Earth Doesn’t Care if You Drive a Hybrid.” The essay inside is titled “What the Earth Knows.” What it knows, according to Robert B. Laughlin, co-winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics, is this: What humans do to, and ostensibly for, the earth does not matter in the long run, and the long run is what matters to the earth. We must, Laughlin says, think about the earth’s past in terms of geologic time.
Quote:
Damaging this old earth is, Laughlin says, “easier to imagine than it is to accomplish.” There have been mass volcanic explosions, meteor impacts, “and all manner of other abuses greater than anything people could inflict, and it’s still here. It’s a survivor.”
Laughlin acknowledges that “a lot of responsible people” are worried about atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels. This has, he says, “the potential” to modify the weather by raising average temperatures several degrees centigrade and that governments have taken “significant, although ineffective,” steps to slow the warming. “On the scales of time relevant to itself, the earth doesn’t care about any of these governments or their legislation.”
I totally agree. I'm sure the earth and the vast majority of its inhabitants will be thrilled and will thrive once we humans have extinguished ourselves from existence.
Love it! Mother Earth doesn't give much notice to us.
And all the far-lefties are working themselves into tizzies and squeezing themselves into the ity bity econo boxes and feeling soo much better about themselves for it.

And they are correct in feeling that way. Humans do not live in "geologic time." We each live very short lives, even those of us who live to 100+ years old. Choices we make in our lives, such as driving a car which pollutes and consumes as little as possible, help create an atmosphere which is beneficial to all of us each day.
The fact that you would mock that just because it won't matter much 100 million years from now tells me all I need to know about you. Are you aware that you're mocking people for not being selfish?

And you, JPD with your flash anger and judgement tells us all we need to know about you!
The fact that you would react with such disdain and arrogance tells the story.

"The Earth doesn't care." Surprise! The Earth is an inanimate object. We, however, happen to have that inanimate object for a home. So perhaps it's more important for us to care about our home than for our home to care about us. Just a possibly outlandish thought.

But there is little humans can do to cause harm to our home, that is the point.
