...what would happen to retail businesses? For example, put a $40 tax on a currently $10 toaster from Walmart and make it $50. How long would it take before OUR manufacturing gets back on a roll? Of course China would nuke us for that. And then we would have to bail them out because they are "too big to fail."

Your exports would tank, and countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Indonesia and Mexico would develop stronger trade arrangements with each other.

Inflation would become a problem.

A lot of folks seem to forget that there is a lot more than just China out there.

We are only 5% of the world population, and not the future engine of growth.

The US would lose $1.05 trillion in exports as countries around the world develop their own tariffs or embargoes.

So our own country wouldn't be able to sustain itself?

i just learned today that the government has decided to end all production of incandescent bulbs in america.

our government doesn't want us to make our own things anymore.

however, if the government was indifferent, i would say it would take about a year to get a factory into production, 5 years to get prices down on our materials, and 10 years to completely turn the market to american production of products and exportation.

Sure, but the inefficiencies are going to be massive. Inflation would be an issue, and how do you develop multiple producers. I'll throw another curve at you too, what keeps companies from fully automating production of many items?

You won't have any exports, so you'd need to ensure sufficient US customers.

You can't, but at least we wouldn't be boosting other nations. China is thriving because of us.

We just don't have the clout anymore. You think broke Americans are the only consumers ?

Why are you asking a stupid question like that on a forum like this?

The last time Congress enacted "massive tariffs" on imported goods was April 1930, just 6 months after the insignificant Stock Market Crash of 1929.

The fact that the stock market recovered in about 8 weeks and had bounced back probably misled the Republican-controlled Congress to believe they could enact what was then the largest tax hike in US history and slap "massive tariffs" on imported goods.

Would you like me to hold your hand and walk you through the Great Depression or can you figure it out yourself?
