With SCOTUS ruling of Citizens vs FEC, corporations and unions can spend unlimited amounts on campaigns AND be anonymous. Wouldn't it be fair to allow this for religions too?
As far as I'm concerned, the SCOTUS can suck my shotgun on this issue. My view is that no one who doesn't live in or own a business in the election's district should be allowed to contribute to any candidate or proposal. In other words, no out of state or out of town money. There should be no financing by religious groups or churches, unless they wish to permanently forfeit their tax-exempt status. Any group formed to campaign for a specific candidate or proposal must provide the details of all people and/or their corporations who contribute to the group and how much they contributed. No secrecy, no alternate names, no hidden corporations, no control of the election process to the group with the most money.
And, if voting is considered free speech, then why can't I vote for the mayor of New York when I live elsewhere? Why can't I vote in every election that doesn't affect me or my representation? There's a reason why votes are restricted to the represented area. Why is funding for those elections not subjected to the same rule?

What makes you think that they don't ALREADY do this? Ever heard of the mormons and the Prop 8 campaign, the funding of NOM (national org for marriage) through the mormon, Catholics funding anti-gay law thru the Knights of columbus? Churches get away with a lot of krap that they shouldn't. they are above the law according to the powers that be.
Organized religion is evil and corrupt. Jesus would not approve.
How exactly would a religion donate to a campaign? Do you mean a specific church? What if a bunch of members of a certain church got together and each donated to one campaign, would you be ok with that?
