Huffington Post - David Segal: Stop the Internet Blacklist

"a group of powerful Senators -- Republicans and Democrats alike -- have signed onto a bill that would vastly expand the government's power to censor the Internet.

The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced just one week ago, but it's greased and ready to move, with a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday. If people don't speak out, US citizens could soon find themselves joining Iranians and Chinese in being blocked from accessing broad chunks of the public Internet.

COICA creates two blacklists of Internet domain names. Courts could add sites to the first list; the Attorney General would have control over the second. Internet service providers and others (everyone from Comcast to PayPal to Google AdSense) would be required to block any domains on the first list. They would also receive immunity (and presumably the good favor of the government) if they block domains on the second list."

Has anyone else heard/read about this from a source other than the Huffington Post..?

That's mentally insane. Censorship by who? The corrupt and overwhelming bureaucratic machine? F*** that. This better not pass, or I might get off my a$$ and help start a real protest.

FOXNews.com - U.S. Wants Broader Internet Wiretap Authority

No, Fox reported on it as well. How ironic. Australia tried to do that in the name of combating kiddie porn and general indecent content that's too much for the kids to handle (even though their proposed filter would have censored the internet at the ISP level, affecting everyone. And political websites were found to be censored as well). The filter ultimately failed and it seems like it won't be up again. Now here they are trying to do the same, under the old tired bogeyman of national security.

This is good ol' Washington bi-partisanship in action. I hate bi-partisanship. The parties should NOT be working together because what's the point of having parties then?? The Obama administration wants to censor the internet now (well I knew about this a while ago because Cass Sunstein first suggested it) after a conservative judge ruled that it's ok for the government to track you with a GPS device attached to your car. Bi-partisanship in action! Democrat and Republican politics in action!!!!

When Republicans and Democrats get together to do something it's unusually bad for ordinary citizens.
