I have no right to jeopardize your safety, you have no right to decide how I spend my money.
You sound like the guy whose house burned.

Are you ?

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/10/05/...obion-expands/
'...Now, local news station ABC 7 is reporting that the Obion County Budget Committee met last night and has decided to expand the subscription-only fire service to additional towns....'

'...Union City Fire Department Chief Kelly Edmison objects to the new expansion, saying that the best option is a true fire tax. It eliminates this having 911 or whoever check to say, ‘Are they covered or not covered?’ The last thing a firefighter wants to do is to not be able to help when they’d like to.” According to documents prepared by the county in 2008, a paltry 0.13 cent increase in property taxes on each household would be all it would take to fund fire services for the towns within the county....'

'Gene Cranick found himself experiencing the Tea Party’s proposed “government a la carte” when he didn’t pay the $75 surcharge to the South Fulton Fire Department. His house caught fire and the fireman did nothing to stop it. Cranick describes his ordeal to Countdown’s Keith Olbermann.':

Those funds come from you, not the federal government. Instead of the feds taking it your local government should be taxing you for these services. How much tax and how it should be spent are better dealt with at local level because they would know what is needed. When the feds take and then give money back to you it leads to a lot of waste because they now dictate how it will be spent, local fire halls might be getting these grants but what if they don't need them? They take the grant anyway so they don't lose it.... In the meantime another local project that might need money goes without.

Wake up.

The federal tax is taken from everybody in the country and disbursed by fed grants to those small fire departments that do not have enough municipal taxes to sustain their small fire depts by themselves. So I in Florida am paying for a small fire dept in Alaska, because Alaska gets the most federal dollars per person in the country. Of course they need it, many small fire departments in America are run by VOLUNTEERS!

And the municipal taxes are not going to cover the rural county fire service at all in the area of this story anyways, that is the problem! The fire chief is trying to tell the rural county residents to get their act together and demand for COUNTY FIRE TAXES instead of RURAL SUBSCRIPTION FIRE SERVICE.

Exactly. WE are citizens, WE pay as we go for all public services. If you would rather pay PRIVATE COMPANIES to do the same exact things, then tack on PROFITS on top of services, like CORPORATE HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES do!
