Politicians in general need to lie so we will vote for them. We want to believe some wiz kid can fix all our issues so they claim they can or invent issues for us to fret over.
If they told the truth, that they are virtually useless & theres not much they can do most of the sheep in this country would roll over & croak.
The fact is we have the country we deserve & if we really want to get back to where we should be WE need to take it seriously enough to stop electing actors and start electing normal people who actually live in the world we do.
We dont need immigration reform, we simply need to enforce the law. We dont need to fear Shira law, we need to stop agonizing over racial profiling. We dont need any big economic overhaul, we just need to cut out ALL things not needed to run the country. We dont need huge social programs, we just need to let those unwilling to care for themselves deal with life on their own.
ALL we need a govt for is to ensure the states dont abuse us and to secure the nation. Nothing more.
Fear is a great motivator. Remember how Bush/Cheney sold us on the dangers of terrorism just before the 2004 election? We would have red/orange level alerts all fall.

Fear, fear everywhere. That's what Republicans are selling.
And in reality, this is now the standard Republican campaign: Create fear among voters, and then play on those fears. It has been so for as long as I've been in politics.

Rick Perlstein's Nixonland, which explores in colorful detail how masterful The Trickster was in conducting precisely just such a divisive, culture-war campaign. In his day, it was all about appealing to white voters fearful about Negro rioters and depraved hippies and conspiring commies. The precise objects of fear have altered slightly -- now it's simply black "criminals" and dirty-hippie liberals and bloodthirsty terrorists -- but the basic outline is the same.
Really, I think it's the liberals who display fear. They fear almost all strong personalities in the conservative party. Instead of concentrationg on what they plan to do and what they can do for our country it seems they spend a great deal of time and attention instilling fear in their constituents about what the evil conservatives might do!

"concentrationg" Please give some solid examples of all these fear installing things you are referring to.
If that's the answer, of course they lie to us! Why? Because we want them to. As Jack Nicholson put it in that movie, "You can't handle the truth!" We've had honest politician's run before (at least, as honest as any human being can be) and they frightened us.
Ask yourself this: What motivates voters in any election? Is it honesty? Is it the issues? Is it character?
Exept for a tiny minority of true believers and singe-issue voters, the answer is...no to all of those. We vote our emotions and always have. If we're angry or frightened, we vote against something. If we're content and happy, we vote for. That's pretty much it.
Consequently, any politician desiring to be elected, and that's all of them, need do nothing more than feed our emotions to win. They don't do that by parsing the issues and telling the unvarnished truth. They succeed by offering bromides and generalities, by ruffling our feathers or smooth-talking us and we like it that way. How do you think George Bush got re-elected in 2004? We were satisfied, so he did nothing to challenge that satisfaction. How did Barack Obama get elected? We were dissatisfied, so he fed that unrest with high-brow talk and few specifics. How will Republican's likely win in November? Fear of Obama.
It's not about the issues, it's once again about emotions and that means we'll be willingly conned again.
