Those are all good things we can learn from Japan. But economically they have had a lost decade. Also their birth rate has dropped to where they cannot maintain their population. The two may be connected.

Their birthrate has dropped to where their population has become stagnant and stabilized. Japan is a level four country which means it's one of the more developed. The United States is a stage three country so it's still not fully developed. Less developed countries have higher fertility rates whereas those that are more developed have lower birth rates and longer life expectancies.

7.) After these waves of bullying in schools, HOW TO DISCIPLINE OUR KIDS should be top priority.

Bullying in Japanese schools is worse than it is here.

So I'm told by more than one source. They must have learned it from us. Either way, they need to start disciplining these obnoxious kids. Maybe that's why they should teach them Bushido in public schools. That might help straighten them out.

daugenstine, they didn't learn it from us.

I like the Japanese. But, we have vastly different norms in many ways. One is not better than the other. They are just....apples and oranges. Many of the problems that they have are tied to their norms. In the very same way that many of our problems are tied to our norms.

The Japanese also have one of the worst histories of racism and human rights abuses in modern history. During World War II they conducted inhumane medical experiments in Manchuria, used Korean women as "Comfort Women", used American, Australian, New Zealander and British POW's as slave labor and had a terrible history of brutality and exploitation in Viet Nam.
I know they've done whaling in the past. Actually, the Chinese are more responsible for shark fishing than the Japanese are. They're the ones who saw off the dorsal fins of sharks and let them sink at the bottom of the ocean before they make sharkfin soup. Meanwhile, the Japanese are environmentally conscious. Have you ever heard of the KYOTO PROTOCOL? The United States is one of only two industrial countries that withdrew from it. The Japanese also are very keen on recycling and composting. In fact, they have few and far between landfills over there. What they do is have utility workers and people doing community service sort out everything recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable from the piles. That's about 90-percent of it.

The other 10 they burn in incinerators and turn into little silicates. They even take some of that garbage and put it into the walls of buildings. For instance, did you know eggshell cartons are excellent for making soundproof walls? Also, disposable baby diapers make superlative insulation. As far as human abuses, I don't know if the Japanese have done anything worse than what we and the Germans have done. We used to own black people as slaves and lynch them. In fact, just 50 years ago, we practiced de jure segregation. Look at the way our society stigmatizes homosexuals, and let us not forget how we treated all the American Indians?

In December of 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army marched into China's capital city of Nanking and proceeded to murder 300,000 out of 600,000 civilians and soldiers in the city. The six weeks of carnage would become known as the Rape of Nanking and represented the single worst atrocity during the World War II era in either the European or Pacific theaters of war.

To Beijing and Seoul's gall, the Ministry of Education and its affiliate the Textbook Authorization Research Council has once again approved the "New History" textbook of right-wing publisher Fusosha.
The textbook refers to the 1937-38 Nanjing massacre, when Japanese troops killed an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 people, by the more innocuous title of "incident". It also explains that the country's actions during World War II were motivated by "self-preservation" and a desire to liberate Asia from Western control.

That didn't come from us. Bullying is as Japanese as Bushido.

I can't even read your entire opening post because it's in red.

But from what I did read, American society USED TO PRACTICE (and still respects those values) everything you pointed out.

The 60's happened and the "needs of the individual" came before "the needs of society" and so we have a breakdown in our society over those things.
