That was 24 years ago and it was done by a Republican Party that in no way is similar to the hard-core Conservative anti-immigration party in office today. In fact President Reagan who raised taxes, ran up record deficits for his time, pass the Brady Bill for handgun control , and also had a stimulus package would probably viewed as too liberal for Conservatives today.
