Press Releases - Press - U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee
Quote:
While policymakers helped to keep income inequality low in the decades after the Great Depression, Bush Administration policies, including tax policies that lowered the top marginal tax rate for the wealthiest Americans, led to growing inequality that left the economy more vulnerable to a deep recession.
The JEC report also found:
  • In the past three decades, the share of income going to the wealthiest 10 percent of households has increased significantly, from 34.6 percent in 1980 to 48.2 percent in 2008.
  • Annual income for middle class Americans – those in the middle income quintile – increased by more than $6,700 during the Clinton Administration. During the eight years of the Bush Administration, this middle quintile saw their annual incomes fall by more than $2,600.
  • Americans across all five income quintiles saw income gains during the Clinton Administration, while, by contrast, incomes fell for each quintile during the Bush Administration.
  • The increase in marginal tax rates for the wealthiest one percent of households during the Clinton Administration did not lower these households’ income. Real income of the top 1 percent grew at an average annual rate of 10.3 percent during the Clinton years.
  • From 1948 to 2005, incomes for Americans in the 60th percentile grew at an average of 2.5 percent under Democratic Presidents, compared to an average growth rate of just 1.1 percent under Republicans.

News flash. Since so many of you are clueless as to what "Socialism" really is, here's a brief lesson:

The Week Magazine - News reviews and opinion, arts, entertainment & political cartoons
Quote:
When Americans complain about taxes, said Steven Hill, they often point to Europe as the ultimate nightmare. But people in “socialist” countries like Sweden are hardly “overtaxed serfs.” Yes, Europeans pay higher taxes than do Americans, but for their money, they get a vast array of services that in the U.S., we must pay a major chunk of our incomes to match. The $200,000 Americans pay for college educations? In most European nations, university educations are free, or very cheap. All that money you’re stuffing into your 401(k), because Social Security payments are so anemic? In Europe, pensions provide more than 75 percent of what people need in retirement. Your soaring health-care premiums? In Europe, health care is available to all without charge, and the average cost per person is half that in the U.S. Child care, senior care, state-of-the-art mass transportation—all are provided without additional charges, in return for the Europeans’ taxes. The reality is that when you include our out-of-pocket expenses for essential services, “Americans pay out just as much as Europeans—but receive a lot less for our money.”
But wait. That's not all that bad!

No.

Why not?
What would you like to know? He doesn't have a criminal record; his legislative record had no blemishes; he doesn't fool around with other women (or men); he holds two undergraduate degrees and a law degree. His college papers are NOT available to the public for scrutiny just as no other president's college papers were produced while they were in office for obvious reasons. In college, you're frequently asked to write a thesis on contentious topics; often you become a member of a debate "team" which is assigned either the prosecution or the defense position when you might personally be in complete opposition to the post you are given by the professor. You become friends with a diverse bunch of people. Those are just examples of events during college that, an angry opposition to a sitting president would have a field day ripping apart and spreading rumors over. (But at least it would have kept Snopes.com in business forever.)

Ironically, if the top 2% actually PAID their fair share (which doesn't come close to 34% after deductions), I wouldn't mind paying my fair share too. If the 49% of lower-income people paid taxes, the amount contributed to the treasury would be peanuts by comparison.

I'm curious how you would react if you suddenly became one of those lower income people who are exempt from income taxes. (They do pay payroll taxes, btw, which in reality would probably equal more than their income tax deduction.) Would you be as critical? Or would you, like everyone else recently put in that position, take whatever government umbrella is available in order to survive?

I love facts. So far, I've yet to see any posted by you. Knock yourself out. I'll give you plenty of time to gather your material together, because I have to log off now. But remember, I deal in facts, not fiction.

What's that saying about never wrestling with pigs? The more I read threads that start like this one, the more I'm convinced of the truth of it.

I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.
