A good, not great, holiday season predicted for retailers | Minnesota Public Radio News

So not totally dismal, but no where near the usual 8% increase retailers used to enjoy.
That's the National Retail Federation telling people to spend more because others are Smart people won't.

I can hardly wait for the media to TELL consumers what the "HotNewToy" is so they run out and buy it making it the "HotNewToy"...

Last year it was zue zue or some dumb thing...saw them in boxes at garage sales this year, people couldn't give them away...

I'm doing what I've always done, but on a bigger scale this year, giving Christmas baskets of homemade breads, cookies, gingerbread men, pies, scones and fudge to neighborhood friends, relatives, and shut in folks I know instead of going out and trying to find them token gifts on a minimal budget. The stuff gets eaten, so you know it's not going to be shoved in the attic or end up in a garage sale. It's fun for me, and requires no shopping except for the materials, which I buy in bulk to save money.

I will do my X-mas shopping in January and February. I expect retailers will be dumping stock at cost to outlet stores and they will pass the savings on to the few customers left. Buying quality goods that last for years on deep discount is so good for the buyer it must be Un-American.

Had to laugh, as I received my "e-blast" from Newegg.com this morning for their "pre-black friday" sales event. Some pretty decent deals on electronics.

The way we are progressing, I'm half expecting black friday to be preceded by black October sales event so that Walmart can put up Christmas stuff alongside Halloween. When you see a Christmas tree in the month of july, were doomed.

In my local Kohls they had Christmas decorations/ornaments etc. up long before Halloween.... probably the second week into October. Home Depot has had their stuff out for a few weeks as well.

I know this was meant to be light hearted. We started getting Christmas freight in before Halloween, and it was set up by Halloween at the latest.

You reminded me--they're going to start playing the Christmas music on Friday. I really hope that the boss does what he's done in past years, and pipe a local rock station through the speakers for us while we work.

I'm not opposed to Christmas music. I even own some. What I don't want is Christmas music 8.5 hours a day for the next 4 weeks.

The biggest Christmas buzz kill would be going to Walmart on Black Friday. I could not even imagine. People pushing and shoving all to get one of the few items that are cheaper than normal. That just does not seem to me to be what Christmas is all about.

I used to love going to the Atlanta Malls when I was a teenager. Much more fun to shop on-line now. I think people will spend more this year. Toys R Us is hiring.
