I agree that it's mostly an empty platitude. I also believe that it was used as a way to prop up the Iraq War. Remember how right-wing neo-cons tried to tell us that if we didn't support the war, it meant that we didn't support the troops? Such BS propaganda.

I'm an Army veteran and I must say that I've never found the statement offensive. However, I do sometimes feel a little sheepish like "Who me? What did I do?" Basically I just showed up for formation at four o'clock in the morning for four years all the while counting down to the day when I would once again be a free man!

They volunteer and do it for mostly selfish reasons.
