I absolutely adore da Vinci's work! Also Botticelli, della Francesca, Cellini, Ghirlandaio, Raphael, Bernini and of course Michelangelo. So to you who are saying atheists would be all offended and incensed about religious artwork being displayed in the Smithsonian, I say hell no! Bring it on. There is some fan-damn-tastic religious art out there, and I love looking at it.
Everybody's a critic. There are a lot of works of art that I don't like either, but I think we still need to encourage artists to produce artwork. Art is one of the things that generates discussion and sometimes addresses sensitive subjects in a way that gets people talking about them. That's not a bad thing, and just because you don't like the particular artwork doesn't make it wrong or a waste of money.

Religion should not and is not free from being criticized. Don't like it? Too bad, so sad. You do not have the right to never be offended. Religion should be criticized! So should any exclusionary dogma. So should anything that subjugates people, discriminates against freedom of speech, teaches bigotry and hatred, or oppresses any person simply because they were born a certain way.
If your religion can't survive that, it is fatally flawed and it doesn't deserve to exist.

Distgusting. This is not "art" it is pornography. While I understand that this falls under the 1st Amendment the Smithsonian should use more discretion if taxpayer funds are being used.

Yeah, I am an American and I pay tax dollars for Art to be displayed in my national museums. If it's thought provoking and cerebral all the better! I like my Art that way.

Exactly. Look at the portraits done by Albrecht Dürer as an example. Considered by many to be one of the greatest portrait artists, his portraits of Christ in his own image were considered by many at the time the ultimate acts of blasphemy, especially the one below. Now people just consider it a beautiful portrait.
Anyway, plenty of non-Christian are taxpayers as well, so that point is moot. Don't like the art? Avert your eyes.
