Logic fail.
We have the same things here in the US, why does Japan do it so much better than we do?

The Japanese mentality is completely different. For instance the Japanese lead much healthier lives, which saves a lot of money. Older Japanese oftentimes continue to receive a salary from the company they worked for their entire lives, even if they no longer work.

I think the one major cause of Detroit's current economic situation is the dependency on one industry (automotive manufacturing). The most stable economies are the most diverse because they can achieve long term, distributed, and sustainable growth.

Republicans are wrong when they say low taxes always equal long term growth.
Democrats are wrong when they say strong unions and a 40% top tax bracket will equal long term growth.

"Middle-aged people are the most susceptible to suicide. The number of suicides per 100,000 people was highest for people in their 50s (38.5 deaths), followed by those in their 60s (33.5) and those in their 40s (32.1). Ominously, the suicide rate for those in their 20s was 24.1 deaths, and it was 26.2 deaths for those in their 30s — both are a record high since 1978."

Detroit has been two steps behind the Japanese auto makes for decades.
The 1974 oil embargo caught Detroit by complete surprise, and the resulting small 4 cylinder cars they produced, were outright jokes.
While Detroit was giving Americans chrome and fins, the Japanese were giving their customers solid engineering and quality control.
These were MANAGEMENT decisions that helped fuel the decline of the American automobile industry.
While the non-stop bashing of the UAW, might make a few of the IQ challenged CD posters happy, it doesn't resonate with the facts?
But then, when did THAT crowd, ever need facts anyway?

Steve

Detroit could make good cars if they wanted to - They just don't want to.

Suicide is a cheap solution for society, attempted suicide can be expensive, but the Japanese are perfectionists

In Japan on the other hand the whole honor and pride thingy is almost an obsession, which is no good, either. I don't think Japan serves as a role model, I would not want to live there.
