I agree, the terms R and D are useless. The terms "Liberal" and "Conservative" are more descriptive and are much more likely to capture a person's true political orientation.

True enough, course I don't see how someone can be for occupation of the Middle East and extending our Empire and still be considered a conservative. That's a huge expense and government is all over it.
lower the debt and smaller Federal government are conservative values

Is there anything "Liberal" about Progressive policy of tax, regulation and forced spread of democracy?
Liberal with other peoples money!
The Republicans have periodically strayed from the Conservative path (deficit spending, increasing the debt, nation-building, etc.) But the Conservative path itself has not changed.
It has always consisted of:
- limited constitutional government
- spending within our means
- strong national defense
- social policies that promote self sufficiency rather than dependency.
If Conservative politicians would stick to this path they would get more support from Moderates and Liberals.
What really matters is the economic philosophy of a candidate. We should switch to (K) and (A) for Keynesian and Austrian, denoting which of the 2 major schools of economics they subscribe to.
The (K)'s have screwed us all. Time to get some (A)'s in there.
Why are we still using Republican & Democrat, to describe a political candidate?
R & D have absolutely no meaning in todays politics. Why still use them, except to confuse the politically uneducated?
I see Republican & Democrat shouted over and over, yet those labels mean nothing today.
The Democrat party of today, is more like the Republican party of 60 years ago (i.e. liberal thinking), and the Republican party today looks exactly like the Democrats of the past (i.e. conservative thinking). Both have changed tunes to win. And they will again. Both mislead to win, as winning is what matters most. The fate of the country..........way down the list of priorities, until the next election mantra.
I personally would prefer poeple in Washington that:
puts America first, before other countries.
puts all Americans first, before corporations, unions, religions, political parties and the lobbyists for all of them.
I don't have any faith that any of the current parties will ever.
I could also care less of how we address the two parties, basically it comes down to them and how they govern us.
How are the canidates going to represent us, in a way, that is going to help us, or are they all talk, and no action as with so many of them. Somehow, they have all these great ideals and agendas then after they are elected, Boom something changes.
