We are falling woefully behind the rest of the world in the disciplines of math and the sciences. This spells disaster for the future of this nation's economy and our children. What is the solution to this problem? Apparently it is Spanish Immersion!

My brother in-law lives in the San Francisco area and many of the top schools out there are adopting a curriculum that includes: 50% of all classes be taught in Spanish.
My wife sits on the board of a charter school here in Boston and their curriculum mandates K-12 Spanish. They don't even give the kids the option of another language.

Is there any doubt that this is the product of liberal lunacy?

Learning a second language is amazing for developing brains. Should it be mandated? I don't know, but I'm going to be teaching my son Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic. That way he can become a globe trotting billionaire one day.

I don't think our failures in math in science are because children were learning foreign languages instead. (If only...)

A combination of failure to support kids at home, a fast-food / easy answer culture, poor teaching and poor educational infrastructure are all failing our kids. NOT Spanish class.

My neice was in a Spanish emersion program back in the early 80's. It worked out great until her 'intelligent' instructors pulled her out in 2nd grade. They said, "she needed to learn English". The family thought that was hilarious since that is her 1st language, and she spoke English quite well.

She was a very bright girl, and was also very brown, except she's Native American, not Hispanic. The school just passed judgement thinking she was from a Spanish speaking family.

It's a known fact that those who speak more than one language increase their IQ. Not surprising that the anti-immigration crowd would oppose that!! LOL

I am all for American students learning another language (I did). However, these admittedly terse descriptions of immersion programs suggest something else.

Ultimately its all moot. English is the global language. That war, as much as it was one, has been won.

Why specifically Spanish? Another boring European language.I think learning an Asian language like Mandarin Chinese would be more advantageous for a child in the long run career/business wise, plus it's non Latin alphabet based so much more intellectually stimulating. At least give the kid a choice if you are going to mandate it.

AFAIK in public schools "Spanish immersion" is an optional stream - extra work for those who choose it.
I'd love to see a link to a public school mandatory immersion program.

A charter school is a private school. They can set their own curriculum as long as they meet certain educational standards.

Why not teach kids about the atom, elementary physics, or find new ways to introduce more complex mathematics to young children?
