This is partly true. The thirst for knowledge and discovering breakthroughs trumps all. Fortunately, my field does have libertarians as well as conservatives and the 6% figure is utter bull**** if you count engineering and comp sci as part of the "scientist" title, since our fields rely a lot on private investment as well as .gov grants. I'm guessing that the figures would not count that, which is a shame because our publications are a direct result from rigorous use of the scientific method to prove or disprove hypotheses.

I'm told through my academic resources it's much worse outside of my field also, esp. when you get into meteorology or any type of organic science (outside of practicing medicine that is). The tendency towards an almost cult-like mentality is very strong.

Most scientists identify as Democrats (55%), while 32% identify as independents and just 6% say they are Republicans. When the leanings of independents are considered, fully 81% identify as Democrats or lean to the Democratic Party, compared with 12% who either identify as Republicans or lean toward the GOP. Among the public, there are far fewer self-described Democrats (35%) and far more Republicans (23%). Overall, 52% of the public identifies as Democratic or leans Democratic, while 35% identifies as Republican or leans Republican.

"There is broad agreement among scientists that a lack of funding currently represents the biggest impediment to conducting high-quality scientific research. Nearly half (46%) cite a lack of funding for basic research as a very serious impediment to high-quality research, while another 41% say it is a serious impediment."

Looks like our "scientists" have good reason for loving big spending Democrats. I see why you didn't want to link to the survey.

So you're eating out of the government trough yourself, quelle hypocrisy!

I have a science degree myself, and have worked in research.
