If someone admits to a federal official that he's used illegal drugs, that information should be sent to the FBI so that person can be disqualified from purchasing a gun, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday. Noting that the alleged shooter in the Tucson massacre had admitted to military recruiters that he had used drugs on several occasions, Schumer said he is proposing to the Justice Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that the military be required to notify federal officials about such admissions. The New York Democrat said such a process does not require new legislation.

Well, this disqualifies every single person who so much as tried pot. This is just (another) flimsy excuse to grab guns.

Past use of drugs should not be a disqualifier. If it were a substantial portion of the population would be prohibited from owning firearms.

Then again, that's what Schumer wants. He truly is a despicable example of an agenda driven legislator that apparently feels he's somehow exempted from his oath to protect and defend the Constitution.

Didn't Obama admit to blowing a little coke in one of his egomaniacal autobiographies?

Drugs wasn't the problem...it was his mental status. These people are idiots.

I disagree with this. Also, not everyone tells the truth on those things, so you're punishing the honest ones.

Also, the military has a threshold for drug use. Smoke pot a few times, and you can still join and carry a weapon. Is he saying that a veteran who has been to countless weapons safety classes shouldn't be allowed to own a gun?

Yeah, it's a shame elected officials aren't subject to the same scrutiny to which Chucky Schumer would subject the rest of us.
