Under the emergency plan, consolidated high-school class sizes would increase to 62 by 2014, "consistent with what students would expect in large university settings." Yet under the terms of the Detroit Federation of Teachers contract, the district must pay bonuses for class enrollment over 35, thus imposing some $11.1 million in new costs through 2014.
Note that this dispensation carries about the same price tag as the school abandonment windfall: In other words, Detroit may end up destroying serviceable capital assets so it can pay its public workers more over the short term.

That was just done in 2010 in the Kansas City Missouri school district. I suspect it will be a model used more often for those districts who've seen their populations drop right along with the tax revenuse funding the schools. It is one way to weed out the bad teachers and keep the good.

Edited to add: However, KCMO school district fired ALL of the teachers to break previous contract obligations and then went about re-hiring on new contract terms. It seems Detroit messed up and didn't do that.

Detroit is a shining example of what happens when you vote for Democrats for over 5 decades straight even though you know they are the ones that are ruining your city.

But it's also the result of off-shoring of our good manufacturing jobs.

Like my grandfather always said - it was the automobile that made the USA so rich and we should never forget that and never give up our great manufacturing industry, but we did forget what made us so rich and we gave it up.

And nothing will replace manufacturing as a wealth generating industry which is why the smart Chinese wanted it.

That's one of the silliest things that I've read on this forum.

Many of America's best-educated and successful old cities lean toward the left, including:

Seattle
Portland
San Francisco
Denver
Minneapolis
Atlanta
Boston
New York
etc.
