I just didn't like the sound. It was like a bad Mariah Carey pre adolescent. She would do better to stick with a flowing tone rather then up and down the scale. I don't think it is a race issue the sound was just bad

I wasn't mocking you. It's just a statement that could apply to every thread on here.

An Indiana school district that told a black teenager to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a "traditional way" after receiving complaints about her performance is drawing questions now about whether the complaints and directive were racially motivated.
Shai Warfield-Cross, 16, has performed the national anthem at sports events at Bloomington High School North over the last year without incident. But school officials said they received complaints about her performance during a game in Martinsville.

Ind. Girl's National Anthem Rendition Stirs Flap - Stop The Presses!

If you believe this not to be based on race, please help me out.

My thoughts are, if you sing it with a country western style, a jazz style, a rock style so what, it's still the star spangled banner. Not every one sings the same, why is it that one way (white) is being valued over another way(black).

Am I being quick to judge??..your thoughts??
When someone is a young singer, they should not try to improvise. A lot of people like to sing along with the anthem, and the way she mangled it, I can see why some folks may have not appreciated her version of the song. Its not a racial thing to me.

Pleae help me out. Can you explain where she mangled it? I listened to it twice and it sounded just like the National Anthem I've always heard. A few notes went different places, as they do with most singers, but they quickly came back to the traditional melody.

I hate when singers try to give the National Anthem a "modern" touch. The National Anthem should be more toned down and somber. It's not a pop/hiphop/rock song, I'm sorry it's just not. The school district had every right to tell her to tone down if they received complaints. Of course they'll back down once the "THAT'S RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!" police show up beat down the white oppressors.

Funny how things become holy writ.

While the lyrics for the Star-Spangled Banner were written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812, the melody dates back to the 1780 when it was the anthem of the Anacreaontic Society of London so the fact of the matter is the national anthem was a early example of sampling.

You can hear the original song "To Anacreon In Heaven," here:

Anacreon Star-Spangled Banner AstroCocktail

Of course the national anthem wasn't the National Anthem until 1931.

You know there are only two purely American music idioms, the Blues and Jazz, so I can't think of a better way to sing what was originally an English melody than by using truly American styles of music.

By the way, I wonder what Beck would have to say about the fact that the evil Progressive Woodrow Wilson was the first President to grant the Star Bangled Banner official recognition by ordering that it be played at all military functions.

I already know what the article is about without even reading it. You mean the over-the-top, black-style vocal acrobatics...?? I think it's common, low-class, trashy, and annoying. I hear people (including whites who try to 'sound black'.. say what you want, that's the truth.. and it seems to be about 95% of them these days)... and I immediately cringe. It's just an automatic physical/mental reaction. Can't stand that whole 'diva' thing. IMO... the anthem should be sung with reverence, respect, simplicity, humility, and pride... not twisted into some tacky pop culture version.

You didn't listen but can make a rational response because of the "Black-Style"...thanks for a minute I thought I was being judgemental by thinking it was racial.

Again, I don't see "this persons" post in this thread. Where are you getting it from?

How could it have been on the 2nd page when you quoted it in post #9 on the first page? Have there been that many posts deleted in this thread? And it really doesn't look like a properly quoted post.
