An Indiana school district that told a black teenager to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a "traditional way" after receiving complaints about her performance is drawing questions now about whether the complaints and directive were racially motivated.
Shai Warfield-Cross, 16, has performed the national anthem at sports events at Bloomington High School North over the last year without incident. But school officials said they received complaints about her performance during a game in Martinsville. Ind. Girl's National Anthem Rendition Stirs Flap - Stop The Presses!
If you believe this not to be based on race, please help me out.
My thoughts are, if you sing it with a country western style, a jazz style, a rock style so what, it's still the star spangled banner. Not every one sings the same, why is it that one way (white) is being valued over another way(black).
What wasn't traditional about that? Sure sounded like the National Anthem to me. It's not like every singer who's done hockey games to the Super Bowl hasn't thrown a couple embellishments in to make it their own. But, the tune was clear as day and quite beautiful.

I already know what the article is about without even reading it. You mean the over-the-top, black-style vocal acrobatics...?? I think it's common, low-class, trashy, and annoying. I hear people (including whites who try to 'sound black'.. say what you want, that's the truth.. and it seems to be about 95% of them these days)... and I immediately cringe. It's just an automatic physical/mental reaction. Can't stand that whole 'diva' thing. IMO... the anthem should be sung with reverence, respect, simplicity, humility, and pride... not twisted into some tacky pop culture version.
You didn't listen but can make a rational response because of the "Black-Style"...thanks for a minute I thought I was being judgemental by thinking it was racial.
The principal at Bloomington High School North has apologized to a student who was told to tone down her singing of the national anthem after a recent rendition sparked complaints.
