"That’s right, no tortillas.Normally, Chicago factories turn out millions of fresh tortillas a day and deliver them to stores here--sometimes twice a day. That way, the soft, paper-wrapped packages are still warm for customers. "

It's not as simple as swapping in a replacement. The Mexican diet relies on complementary proteins from beans, corn and rice.
Furthermore, corn tortillas are made from masa which is nixtamalized.
Nixtamalization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The primary nutritional benefits of nixtamalization arise from the alkaline processing involved. These conditions convert corn's bound niacin to free niacin, making it available for absorption into the body. Alkalinity also reduces the amount of the protein zein available to the body, which, though this reduces the overall amount of protein, improves the balance among essential amino acids.
Secondary benefits can arise from the grain's absorption of minerals from the alkali used or from the vessels used in preparation. These effects can increase calcium (by 750%, with 85% available for absorption), iron, copper and zinc.
Lastly, nixtamalization significantly reduces (by 90-94%) mycotoxins produced by Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium proliferatum, molds that commonly infect maize and the toxins of which are putative carcinogens.

Pellagra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The traditional food preparation method of corn (maize), nixtamalization, by native New World cultivators who had domesticated corn required treatment of the grain with lime, an alkali. It has now been shown that the lime treatment makes niacin nutritionally available and reduces the chance of developing pellagra. When corn cultivation was adopted worldwide, this preparation method was not accepted because the benefit was not understood. The original cultivators, often heavily dependent on corn, did not suffer from pellagra. Pellagra became common only when corn became a staple that was eaten without the traditional treatment.
In the early 1900s, pellagra reached epidemic proportions in the American South. There were 1,306 reported pellagra deaths in South Carolina during the first ten months of 1915; 100,000 Southerners were affected in 1916.

Hmm... does this masa diet cover other South American diets? And Mexicans aren't exactly known for being examples of health and fitness. The longest lived human beings aren't found in Mexico, but in places like Japan. The traditional Japanese fish diet is much healthier.
And I don't think that modern society needs to worry about pellagra. That last outbreak was back in 1916.

American's are obviously not that much of a shining example of health either. Life expectancy is only 2.1 years more than that of Mexico. You're also lumping in your stereotype w/ all Mexican's. Most are not your stereotype and those living on both coasts eat much more similar diet to the Japanese than Central or Northern Mexico. Kind of how we in the U.S. do. Go figure.
"Jeffrey Pilcher is a historian at the University of Minnesota who studies Mexican food and culture. There’s no equivalent to the tortilla in the American diet, he says."
Pardon me for making this too simple but I know an easy way to fix this problem.
Pita bread might work in a pinch.. or they could, you know, make their own tortillas? probably taste better homemade anyway.
I thought the same thing. But apparently, in the Age of the Internet, you're not actually supposed to do anything for yourself (but you can complain all day long when things aren't working the way you want them to!)
