He wasn't a founder of the KKK, he was given the leadership title by others who did so more out of their respect for his service to the CSA. Initially he did support it when it was going after the carpetbaggers, etc., but then he actively opposed it as it became the violent, racist group it became...

He was by the standards of the time not particularly racist.

Mississippi has a lot to be proud of. You could have a Jeff Davis plate and then you could have a series of more modern plates. How about the gunning down of Medgar Evers. Another plate could have a burning bus for the Freedom Riders. How about the the roting bodies of the 3 voting rights activists (Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner) near Philadelphia MS. A plate using a 1960s iconic picture of the Sheriff Raney and his Deputy who stood trial for this killing out side Philadelphia MS and were acquitted by an alll white jury. It could have the slogan Support your local police". This could all be rounded out by a plate with a burning church and cross and the slogsn "Light Your Faith".

The problem with a Nathan Beford Forrest plate is it would be a commemoration of a man who committed TREASON against the United States of America. How would this be any different than putting Benadict Arnould on a New York State licence plate for his key role in winning the Battle of Saratoga and keeping the USA from being cut in two. He may have prevented the USA from being to this day a British Dominion. On the other hand this might have not been such a bad thing.

Radical anti-secessionist chief justice of the supreme court Salmon Chase quite clearly said secession was not treason...

The founding fathers committed treason when they abandoned the articles of confederation. They were also slave owners and slave traders.

Because this is solely of interest to Mississippians or would you prefer that it not get as wide an audience?

Taking history lessons from Sarah Palin these days?

What an utterly absurd comment.

Some were, most were not.

I was using that as a form of satire. I don't think that actually committed treason, just as I don't think it was treason to secede from the Union.

I don't care what Salmon P Chase said. He and his compatriots supported Jim Crow and being a Supreme Court Justice does not mean you can't be a disgrace to the United States of America. A good example was Roger B Taney who found against Dred Scot.

Not Treason? Doing activities that lead to the death 600,000 Americans goes a little bit beyond the usual kissy kissy of American politics.

Maybe West Virginia should try a plate honoring Robert Byrd?
