Portman basically had no choice but to speak out. She just became the new face of Miss Dior Cherie fragance, and to remain the public face of a corporation that is now mired in this scandal, would mean the potential death of her career.

It's also possible for people to view individual incidents and judge each on their separate merits (or lack thereof). And even if you find them congruent, others might not. Ms. Portman is entitled to support a person in one situation but wish to distance herself from a second person in a different situation, under the heading of "one thing is not like the other".

Obviously your mileage varies, but that doesn't automatically make her a hypocrite.

As for Polanski, the teenager had consensual sex with him so it was statuatory rape, and she has made a public statement that she does not want him to be imprisoned. If the "victim" doesn't want him punished, and if he does not pose a risk to others as a sexual perv, then I'm not going to get too harsh on Natalie for signing the petition. I would not have signed it, however. I just don't like the guy.
The girl was given drugs and alcohol and she was 13.

I wouldn't call that "consensual sex".

They didn't have the term in those days, but it is now called date rape.

A 13/14 year old girl has consensual sex with a 40+ year old? She has already said she did not have consensual sex.

In a 2003 interview, Samantha Geimer said, "Straight up, what he did to me was wrong. But I wish he would return to America so the whole ordeal can be put to rest for both of us." Furthermore, "I'm sure if he could go back, he wouldn't do it again. He made a terrible mistake but he's paid for it." In 2008, Geimer stated in an interview that she wishes Polanski would be forgiven, "I think he's sorry, I think he knows it was wrong. I don't think he's a danger to society. I don't think he needs to be locked up forever and no one has ever come out ever — besides me — and accused him of anything. It was 30 years ago now. It's an unpleasant memory ... (but) I can live with it."
I guess time heals a few wounds after Polanski hiding in Europe for decades.

How do you know he's not a risk?

For all of those who believe that Roman Polanski had consensual sex with a teenager (ie a 17 year old) ...please read the girl's grand jury testimony. She was 13 years old, he gave her qualudes and alcohol and then he had anal, oral and vaginal sex with her after she repeatedly told him "no".

Polanski The Predator | The Smoking Gun

The transcripts are in two parts and are the girl's detailed account of what happened to her.

Sorry I missed that evidence. There were so many accusations and outrage swarming around it I was hard pressed to find the actual details of the case.
The charge he plead guilty to... Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a minor. In other words not rape. All other charges dropped. No protestation from the actual victim besides being given ample opportunity from media & courts to tell her side of the story.

The victim and her attorney statement regarding the judge's conduct:
Quote:
"He didn't care what happened to me, and he didn't care what happened to Polanski. He was orchestrating some little show . . . " Geimer's attorney, Lawrence Silver, adds that Polanski "was supposed to be treated fairly, and he clearly was not."
Why would it be this woman would be defending him if she had every motive to be vindictive or plainly see justice enforced fully on her behalf? His side of the story, her side of the story-- both irrelevant?

Yeah, yeah, down Natalie all you want, we all know in a driving rainstorm , her car breaks down in front of your house, she knocks on your door, you'd swing that door open so fast you'd hurt yourself.

I think that Natalie (like oh so many other actors) are quiet forgiving when there is the remote possibility that the "wrong doer" could possibly help their careers.

And as disgusting as John Galliano's comments were, someone will still buy his couture because his designs make them look fabulous.
