This is something we need to require in the United States. That all immigrants learn to speak English to work here.

Italy makes immigrants speak Italian for work visa - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110305/ap_on_re_eu/eu_italy_speak_our_language - broken link)

Racists? Why? It's not racism to require people to speak the national language for a work permit.

the problem could be solved a lot easier here. Just by switching to the fairest method of taxation.. a fixed flat tax on all goods and services. No exceptions.

I'm not sure how relevant that is. I think for starters, the United States should establish a national language. Only then could it enforce such a rule.

I agree! Everyone who lives in the United States should learn English and speak it fluently. My grandmother who has lived here most of her life still does not know how to communicate. I mean I'm fully bilingual. I'm proficient in both spanish and english. If I can do it why can't other people. It's especially sad when you have large immigrant communities concentrated in one place. (South Florida) I mean a person actually told me that they didn't have to learn how to speak English because everyone spoke both languages in Miami. I wanted to kick them back to their country!

It's harder to learn languages as you get older. So it depends on when they came here. If someone comes here at an old age (45+), they won't be able to pick up english like their children will.

I agree with your sentiment, but we must remind ourselves that having a mentality of sending (legal) immigrants back to where they came from, is against the American philosophy and should not be tolerated.
