Yes, the Dems were absolute idiots for not passing a budget but that doesn't mean the other party gets a pass.

While we need huge cuts, I think it's important to look at what will be axed for $61 Billion. I believe some of those cuts are unacceptable and, while making the bottom line look better, would destroy the nation in other ways.

So yes, I think they need to compromise.
Let's look at what who has been trying to compromise. The GOP wanted 61bil the Dems wanted 10bil, after weeks of negotiating the Dems agree to 33bil, the GOP agree to 61bil. Errr, what is compromise exacly?

The GOP has already compromised by bringing the cuts down to 61 billion. It's a very small amount compared to the deficit that the country has. It's time to do some serious cutting in our spending, or the country will not survive. Both sides say the level of spending is unsustainable, but the Dems like the status quo; their failure to be honest about their budget before the elections shows that they intended to spend a lot more than is reasonable or prudent, and they didn't care. They just took pains to hide it from the public.

Err, the House passed a Budget bill that cuts 60bil from this years budget. That bill goes to the Senate who is to present their proposal. The Senators look at the House Bill and try to create a compromise bill to return to the House. Then they go into conference to hopefully work out differences. The end result, is a bill that Congress, House and Senate agrees to. If the President agrees, he would sign it. That is how it is supposed to work. However, the 2nd step, the Senate has been negotiating, well the Senate Dems have, but the Repubs have offered nothing to the compromise. The Budget proposal started at 60bil and the Repubs have made no compromise from that.

The only polls that count are the ones conducted in November. The Democrats lost those -- to a historic degree. Why should the GOP need to compromise when the Dems sold the country out for generations to come with their cynical spending orgasm in the waning days before the 2010 election?

The jackasses wanted this fight. Maybe they think they can pull another Wisconsin and just run away. Funny how those on the left seem to think that that is a statesmanlike approach to governance.

If the GOP shut all the Federal government down I take it those troops in Afghanistan would be expected to keep on doing their jobs while they are not getting paid ?

If the supply lines stop to the troops what then, fix bayonets and pull belts in because both the ammo and so called food in rat packs are no longer in the pipe line ?

How can it help the GOP if supplies to USA forces stop ?

Not only would the troops be expected to continue working but so anyone in the US who is considered security essential and anyone who took care of sick people , which would include Border Patrol, customs officials, FBI, nurses and Dr's working for the government would all be expected to work without pay. I thought I saw a story that they were trying to make sure the military continued to get paid.

My husband worked through the 1996 shutdown, he and his fellow agents had to continue doing their work despite no pay.

Politics is about compromise, just because the republicans made large gains in November doesn't mean they get to do as they want. Truth is that these budget cuts are just pandering to the public cutting stuff on fringe, neither side really wants to address serious budget reduction by going after the big 3, medicare, Social Security and Defense.

A shutdown will be great. Think of the billions that we will save every day if the government DOES shut down.

Obama and the dems need to face reality and stop living in a fantasy land- we are broke and need to dramatically cut spending.

It is funny the Repubs want this. But then learning is difficult to some. Boehner hasn't the strength to lead the House. He has become a TP whipping boy.
