"A basic educational challenge is not that teachers are raking it in, but that they are underpaid. If we want to compete with other countries, and chip away at poverty across America, then we need to pay teachers more so as to attract better people into the profession.

Until a few decades ago, employment discrimination perversely strengthened our teaching force. Brilliant women became elementary school teachers, because better jobs weren’t open to them. It was profoundly unfair, but the discrimination did benefit America’s children.

These days, brilliant women become surgeons and investment bankers — and 47 percent of America’s kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers come from the bottom one-third of their college classes (as measured by SAT scores). The figure is from a study by McKinsey & Company, “Closing the Talent Gap.”

I've got ZERO problem paying good teachers more money. What I don't like is paying ALL teachers more because they are union regardless of how crappy they perform. This is the problem with unions.

no, it's lazy people that dominantly become teachers , especially in the k -8 grades. They don't want their peers judging them while they work, so they know by being a teacher the kids will think they are smart just b.c the teacher is older than them. Most teachers would not make it in the average business now a days. Surely not in a private sector job that is equivalent to the LUXURIOUS pay they are getting for 'teaching'. You don't see school teachers going from teaching to good private jobs, b.c they just don't have the skills, knowledge, education and mentality.

Anyone who went to university knows... that the School of Education if full of overweight ladies who want an easy ride in life.

I'm so sorry if I offended anyone, my thoughts obviously don't apply to every teacher, but unfortunately too large of a percentage. The only way the future generations will be free, is if we all accept the truth.

Exactly, merit pay would accomplish what Kristof suggests. But unions that won't even accept changing last in first out, aren't about to allow actual accountability.

Believe me, kids can tell a dumb teacher from ten miles way. They're very astute little creatures.

They may not be lazy, but they clearly aren't the best and brightest, as the article points out.
