Somehow, despite bad weather conditions the Chinese were able to evacuate 4,000+ of their workers in their military ships.

Speculation all week attempting to give the POTUS the benefit of doubt about not speaking out and naming Gaddafi specifically in his critizism may have been for the safety of American not yet evacuated. But, was Obama making a serious effort? We couldn't take a military ship in? We couldn't even get a large eough ferry rented? Really?

Yes, while Obama was having his Motown party in the WH Americans were still stranded in Libya.

If anyone could make Fmr. Pres. Carter's failure in Iran to get out hostages look good it was Obama in this shameful display.

Didn't know you? The waters were too rough for our delicate, expensive ships to come ashore on

Being stranded and being a hostage are 2 different things.

Indeed. Obama makes Carter look good in that respect. Thanks for showing how far the bar has been lowered.

I'll take Carter's performance in Iran over Reagan's performance in Lebanon anytime. Then he turned tail and ran home!

It is eerie. As predicted, he is Jimmy Carter II. The nation will be cured of liberalism for another 30 years after his term. In 30 years, they will forget and make the same mistake again.

I was not aware that we were in a competition with China to see who could evacuate the most people in the shortest time.

Quite a lot of evacuations were impacted by the weather and not just the US one. The State department may well have felt that they were safer on the ferry in port than trying to sail through bad weather.

Where people are being evacuated from also makes a big difference. The situation in Tripoli is much more dangerous than it is in Benghazi. There are relatively few US citizens in Libya compared to some nationalities and I would not be surprised if the US was not working with the UK, France and others to pool evacuation facilities. The US ferry also had some 49 British nationals when it departed from Tripoli harbour.

From the BBC:

HMS Cumberland has picked up 207 people including 68 British nationals from Benghazi and is due to arrive in Malta on Friday night, where evacuees can pick up flights to the UK.

BBC News - Britons urged to leave Libya on final flight

I would bet there were a good few US citizens on that ship.

I don't think we are in a position to know how this is being handled and I don't think that verbal sniping from the sidelines is especially helpful.

I disagree with Obama on most issues, but in this case I think he handled it as best as possible. Neocons are angry because he didn't speak out forcefully right away. They're ignoring and don't seem to care about the Americans who were trying to get out of Libya. If something terrible were to happen to the Americans, I'm sure someone would blame Obama. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
