What happened to the GOP is that they've figured out that corporations make bigger contributions than unions do. They're now owned and operated by big oil, big tobacco, and the military-industrial complex. The American public is no longer relevant to them.
And they've also learned that a certain segment of the population willingly follows them wherever they go if they occasionally say certain things, but never act on them.
