I'm very serious, it's difficult not to notice (unless you an avid talk radio listener and such) the death of politics of ideas in the USA. Anything that is not Pro Big Wealth, Big Corporation, Big Imperial Government/Army/Police/Homeland Security etc. is on the margins. Anything. Prove me wrong, I dare you. Oh, Al Gore, I forgot. There is something deeply ironic & ridiculous if a born&bread ruling class guy is designated to be "extreme left" for simple act of calling plebeians to make more "environmentally friendly" consumer choices. It's an essence of the system shattering message of Al Gore, it's an extreme American leftist according to some .

Sometimes I feel sorry for the corporate media grunts and talk radio DJs, they are entrusted with very difficult task - blowing up minuscule, barely noticeable differences between Republicans and Democrats to the Cosmic, Good vs. Evil proportions. Thankfully, it doesn't take much to do that trick on the strategically dumbed down & chronically indoctrinated American populace. However, if rift between the real and "make believe" worlds become too wide, one cannot count on propaganda and mind control alone. That's a reason why Republicans and Democrats unite in elimination/undermining of civil liberties one by one, Patriot acts, Indefinite Detentions&Assassinations without trial, suspension of Habeas Corpus, TSA trooper grabbing your diick, you swallowed everything without a hint of protest. That's how it's being done in the real world to push a "Change". Nazis didn't just announced to Jews "Common everybody, let's board a train to a Crematorium" in 1936, that could lead to a bloody unrest. Everything was done in steps, one civil liberty at a time, while leaving a hope of survival at each step. The art of social control and mass handling knows no borders.

Let's summarize:

1) Civil Liberties - Republicans & Democrats united.

2) Foreign Policy - Historically, regardless of who is a President, Republican or Democrats, American ruling class was remarkably consistent in its foreign policy in the past 70 years, if not 200. Bloated military, Neocolonialism, Military Interventions, overthrowing disobedient governments (including democratic) who refused to transnationalize local economies, Making world safe for transnationals, unconditional support of Israel, naturally, etc., etc. Democrats & Republicans Unite.

3) Internal Policy. Both parties are entrusted in providing compliant labor force for the corporate machine run by the anointed on the behalf of the anointed and keeping disposed labor surplus under control. Both parties are eager to fulfill their duty to the top 10% including themselves. While Republicans historically are/were in favor of Socialism for the rich with rugged individualism for lower classes as the most cost effective way to provide compliant, cheap and docile labor (Hint, if one is robbed of social & family support networks, one is on the absolute mercy of owners of means holding his meal ticket in their hands, the rest is obvious (to everybody except lower class Conservatives) ). Democrats, while wholeheartedly supporting socialism for the rich ever since bullets went through Kennedy' head, were little bit confused as far as handling lower classes goes. In Democrats eyes, combination of whip with honey would work a mule better. It's a pleasure to see that Democrats finally start seeing Republican light of "whip unlimited". Since "Socialism for the Rich" demands way too much "honey", working classes have to learn to live without. As decimated Union' coffers getting emptier every year, as costs of election shows escalates, Democrats finally discovered bottomless Corporate Watering trough, and they LIKE IT a lot.

Since both parties drink from the same trough, politics of ideas degenerated to the pure politics of business disagreements. So why bother with political parties?

Let's look at Mr. Change (a change rocket launched by Wall Street guys) track record.

1) Bail Out. Socialism for the Rich Classic. Why spend money to buy bankrupt banks for penny on a dollar (that would be "Socialism", big, big NO) when you can spend a trillion to cover banker's losses? No worries, bankers would glandly lend us 1 trillion back, at interest naturally. If that's not absurd, what is?

2) Health Care Monstrosity. Instead of transparent, proven Western European or Canadian like socialized system, a true monster keeping insurance industry profits very close to its heart while adding a layer of government administrators on top of the mess.

3) "Recovery and Reinvestment act" What an amazing euphemism to call a give away of trillions of dollars to Corporate entities, domestic and foreign. What about me? $3,000,000,000,000/300,000,000=30,000 for every American. Can you imagine talk radio going berserk after Obama "$30,000 check in a mail act?" 30,000 check in a mail is Socialism for the poor, BAD. In order to push "Recovery and Investment" through, Obama jumped into Republican bed. Republicans being Republicans, naturally demanded yet another tax cut for the rich as a condition. Obama gladly obliged. Rejoyce, Rejoyce, the people who caused financial meltdown are getting extra a mill or two in tax rebates this year on top of their stellar compensation. Remember, work hard, play by the rules and it could be you collecting

Lastly, neither Obama nor Democrats are capable and/or have guts to even outline challenges we are facing, not speaking of offering solutions. There is NO point for Democratic party existence. Republicans, regardless of my disdain, are consistent in their push for social Darwinian (for the poor), police Empire ruled&exploited by plutocrats chosen by God (naturally). Democrats used to object social Darwinian aspect of Republican ideal state, but that objection is getting weaker every year. So what's the point?

They usually talk a different game, but the theft is the same.

Rememberme, you say the same exact things I believe, but we disagree on one thing. You seem to be slightly trending the class warfare direction, unless I'm wrong. Whereas I believe much of the same the Founding Fathers and Andrew Jackson did. There's nothing wrong with individualism. In fact, being ready to survive a crisis by being individualistic, instead of collectivist, is how rural people survived the depression and crashed Britain and relegated the £ to the dustbin and elevated the dollar as reserve currency. The "evil rich" are not exploiting the masses. But there is one class of rich people that are, and those are the ones heavily invested in companies such as JP Morgan & Chase, and Goldman Sachs. The megabanks are what own this country and it's politicians lock, stock, and barrel. Unless I'm mistaken about your post and interpreted it wrong, but that's the interpretation that I got.

I think that moderate and conservative Democrats are pretty similar to liberal and moderate Republicans. They should unite and form one party. The liberal faction of the Democrats, which is like 2 senators, should form the liberal party. The right wing faction of the GOP should form a fascist party.

3 parties, one right, one left, and one middle.

If the Dems and Repubs merged and admitted they were one party, then those of us who believe in fiscal responsibility, small government, and freedom would have a choice and a voice. I don't see that happening.

They can't ever let a true Libertarian run for office, since he might win. Which is why the deck is stacked with fewer and fewer paying massive taxes, and more and more getting checks from government. They'll always outvote us, and our only recourse is to "Go Galt" en masse. Of course, Washington politicians will simply borrow more and keep spending, until someone notices that our own Fed is now buying most of our debt.

The ultra-rich and the politicians they own LOVE things the way they are, and think they can simply move somewhere else with their immense wealth, after America achieves the hyper-inflation and total economic collapse they are charging towards. I hope to be out of here before they achieve their goal, but at the rate they're moving, we may be only a year or two away...

Both parties are too scared of not getting elected again, so they won't take care of this national debt.

No money, either these two parties get it done or they are done IMO.
