If you have plenty of money and a small population then you can afford lots of social programmes, however Norway is a mixed market economy rather than a socialist economy.
All Nordic countries have the same economic model, which is free market economy with taxpayer funded social programs like health care and education.
What does that have to do with anything? North Korea's population is the most homogeneous population in the world so by your logic they should be the most successful nation of all
Again apples to oranges. What about South Korea?
The number of indigenous minorities was negligible. In South Korea, people of foreign origin, including Chinese, Japanese, Westerners, Southeast Asians, South Asians, and others were a small percentage of the population whose residence was generally temporary.
I don't understand how a country with no libertarian tradition can have such a huge surplus AND provide cradle-to-grave government handouts to its people.
Something doesn't add up.
Maybe they have so much money left over from so many suicides that they DON'T have to fork out for gov't provides services.
And, we have $1 Trillion saved up from the Oil revenues.. owning 1.3% of the worlds stocks.
Comparing two nations based on population is not a problem.. its all about %.
My wife, who works for a huge multinational with offices all over the world, often talk to other nationalities when they come to Norway for meetings or she travels there, the talk almost always wonder into the work/life balance, workers rights, salaries and taxation. This is in a "Non-oil" related corporation.
She says without a doubt 99% of everyone she talks to, wants to transfer to the Norwegian office.
And she classifies those from the US, as shocked how good the workers have it here.
Its night and day, even compared to Great Britain, where she used to work in the finance district in London.
Social Democray, which we are, is a GREAT way of allocating resources.. everybody pays into the system, and everybody gets what they need out of the system. Private enterprise is highly encouraged, easy to start new business.
My wife who earns roughly $150.000, is taxed at 34-38%.
I earn $50.000, and is taxed at 32%.
I took a voluntary pay cut, after saving for years in stocks, before when I used to have a "high stress job" for 12 years.
I don't understand how a country with no libertarian tradition can have such a huge surplus AND provide cradle-to-grave government handouts to its people.

Most western countries are free market liberal mixed market economies.
They are not therefore socialist states at all.
As for Norway it is luckier than most states having twice as mych oil and gas as the entire UK North Sea, whilst having a population of only 5.2 million.
The fact that they have a massive wealth fund should also help them in the coming decades when such fossil fuels are due to decline massively.
