This is why it will always make more sense for U.S welfare to be aimed at specific groups such as medicaid for certain poor people and medicare for the elderly etc.
Its like your aunt can cook a great turkey dinner for 9 people in her home, and an outsider thinking she can have the same exact result if she were to make turkey dinner for 300 people who live in over 100 different homes in 50 different states.

Well, the suicide rate got higher after they chose a more conservative government (still pretty far left if you're american or british), with more people losing their sick leave/compensation when they are so sick that they aren't even able to work, people with cancer, heart diseases, psychiatric diseases, paralyzed people has to work (although most people still get their money, there are some who are not) alot of them are commiting suicide since they are not capible of working and getting the money they need. It's a mistake that the government are working.
Sweden has a really really low murder rate compared to for example USA, and I'd rather have a high suicide rate than a high murder rate. There aren't alot of people killing people for the need of money in Sweden, because of the welfare system.

Look at forbes list of the worlds happiest people, all of the scandinavian countries are in the top (except Iceland) Table: The World's Happiest Countries - Forbes.com

1 Denmark
2 Finland
3 Norway
4 Sweden

No it's not. With more people paying a little more in taxes, the country can afford it to all those states. It's like if all of those people added their aunts to help cooking with your aunt.
