The feds indicted the heads of the leading online poker sites on multiple charges.

Charges include the laundering of billions of dollars of taxable income through United States processors.

This indictment comes just a few days after Washington D.C. announced that it had legalized online gaming.

D.C. slips online, fantasy gambling into bill - Washington Times

Recently many of the industry leaders have signed deals with leading casinos in Las Vegas.

This will pave the way for United States based companies to lead the online poker industry and at the same time take advantage of the billions of dollars of taxable income it has missed out on since attempting to snuff it out with regulation.

Anybody else care about this? I'm out of a job at the moment so this just turned me upside down. Looks promising for the future but is a major set back to the industry in the short term.

Blame america's puritanical past for its attitude over "sin".

We lose out on being the forefront of online poker, online full-service casinos, comprehensive online sports-books, etc to the europeans and asians. This is asinine.

Is anyone else as baffled by the above comment in context of the OP as me?

I hope the end result is what you are suggesting, but I don't see why they had to go about it this way. The US gov has been gunning for online poker for a long time - I am not in the camp that they are doing this to somehow take over the industry. It really feels like they want to shut it down

These sites make huge amounts of money. Up to 500k people from around the world on them at one time. Online poker is definitely not going away.

The federal government (i.e. the real criminals) is looking to regulate and tax.

Back in December Senator Reid introduced a bill that was going to black out online poker in the US while U.S. companies could get established and be able to compete come legalization.

A 15 Month Poker Blackout? (http://teammoshman.com/a-15-month-poker-blackout/ - broken link)
At the last second, via the lame duck congress, this bill did not go through. So for the last 4 months people have been carrying on as usual. Meanwhile the FBI puts together this investigation, Online poker sites sign with Casinos, and D.C. legalizes online poker within its district.

They clearly set them up to be able to re-establish themselves, they will just soon be under US law.
