Republicans Call for Economic Suicide One More Time | CJOnline.com

While it defies history and good sense, Republicans continue to vigorously support tax cuts for richest Americans. To find the money, they intend to shift the increasing costs of health care to the elderly and disabled. It would be hell, and Obama in his soft, professorial way said so.

How can anyone steal from the poor when 47% of American tax payers pay no federal income taxes in the first place?

Geez....

Here -- They're not laughing with you ... - News & Views - Detroit Metro Times

1. Poor Americans do pay taxes.

Gretchen Carlson, the Fox News host, said last year, "47 percent of Americans don't pay any taxes." John McCain and Sarah Palin both said similar things during the 2008 campaign about the bottom half of Americans.

Ari Fleischer, the former Bush White House spokesman, once said, "50 percent of the country gets benefits without paying for them."

Actually, they pay lots of taxes — just not lots of federal income taxes.

Data from the Tax Foundation shows that in 2008, the average income for the bottom half of taxpayers was $15,300.

This year, the first $9,350 of income is exempt from taxes for singles and $18,700 for married couples, just slightly more than in 2008. That means millions of the poor do not make enough to owe income taxes.

But they still pay plenty of other taxes, including federal payroll taxes. Between gas taxes, sales taxes, utility taxes and other taxes, no one lives tax-free in America.

When it comes to state and local taxes, the poor bear a heavier burden than the rich in every state except Vermont, the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy calculated from official data. In Alabama, for example, the burden on the poor is more than twice that of the top 1 percent. The one-fifth of Alabama families making less than $13,000 pay almost 11 percent of their income in state and local taxes, compared with less than 4 percent for those who make $229,000 or more.

Which is exactly what I said, we are talking about federal income tax which almost half of this country doesn't pay. On a federal level how can anyone steal from the poor and give to the rich when the "poor" don't pay anything in the first place?

Who claimed that anyone did? Why can't you answer my question? Why should anyone be allowed to live in this country and pay no federal income taxes on their income?

What are you talking about? Where are you geting this crazy notion? You can't shift costs of anything onto people who pay nothing, which is the majority of the poor. They pay no income taxes and that is the primary tax that supports welfare programs.

yes, many pay certain taxes, but most pay very little. They often are renters so their utilities are covered except for water and phone: they don't buy much or shouldn't if they are that broke so their sales taxes are lower than someone in the middle or upper income class, a huge number of those who pay no state or federal income taxes also are unemployed, living on government assistance so where do you get the idea they pay payroll taxes? As for 11% versus 4%, last time I did any math 11% of $13.000 was a hell of a lot less than 4% of 229,000. this is the old argument the libs throw out all the time.

Paying your own way = stealing from the poor ?

No one wants to take from disabled or elderly .
Those are the only people I want to help .

I am sick of people thinking not working is a job. If you can work I don't want to pay you way.
I surely don't want to pay 25% of your train fare .
Your college tuition is not in my budget.
You can drop off all the children you can't afford at an orphanage , I will pay for that.
Have a nice day.

Much of the 47% who pay no income tax also get cash, food stamps, housing vouchers, heating assistance, and much much more from the 53%. A blogger I read says it best when he calls them the "free s*** army". Not only are the "poor" stealing from taxpayers they (and their Democrat enablers) are destroying the United States with their out of control debt.
