Can anyone else think of another single-purpose/ high risk/ high-profile targeted military raid anywhere that was executed as brilliantly as the Seals raid in Abbottabad this week? I can think of only one- the Israeli Commando hostage rescue at Entebbe Airport in 1976.

Any others you can think of?

Bin Laden was UNARMED. The only people shooting were the SEALS. They were trigger-happy playing for the cameras.

I'm sure there have been lots of similar raids that we'll never hear about.. They dont train these people to sit around and wait for a task every 10 years...

I think that's a reasonable point- there have undoubtedly been many successes (and failures) we never hear about- though it stands to reason we'd be a lot more likely to hear about the successful ones.

But I'm thinking about raids like this, where history is made: the target is critical, the stakes are through the roof, books and movies are sure to follow, win or lose... and the operation is a resounding success.

I actually thought of another (again, Israeli)- the bombing of the nuclear plant in Iraq (1982?).

Dewey's raid on Tokyo? Any others?

Well, any high-risk raid where hostages are successfully liberated would probably rank higher on the "difficulty" scale of things. The absence of hostages in this case changes the calculations quite a bit.
