The Dems may be the Party of War, but the GOP is definitely the party of Depression. The Great Bush Recession is just the most recent example of a Dem Admin having to come in and clean up a GOP mess.
@ OP, it is fitting that Obama's ratings should rise in the wake of getting bin Laden. That was a stunning victory in a war that doesnt have many.
But, it won't count for much in 2012. This is the United Staes of Amnesia. The state of the economy and people's pocket books are going to be way more important to Obama's re-election chances.
And as of now, the economy is still in trouble. Bush @#$%^& things upperfectly. It may take longer than four years to right the ship. And, of course Obama only gets four years to show some progress, or it's adios.
Add to that, the GOP's job right now is to make sure things stay @#$%^&*-up till election time. Everything Boehner and the GOP Govs do till then makes perfect sense, if you think about it in those terms.
Obama will never enjoy sustained support much higher than the low-mid fifties because... well, just because. I saw a poll yesterday that said the number of GOPers who still believe Obama wasn't born in the US has crept back up to 50%
On the bright side for Obama, the GOP candidates for 2012 so far are not impressive, to put it kindly. Nonetheless, I predict a close election.
And what specifically is impressive about Obama?
Record deficit spending?
Gas prices/energy policy?
9% unemployment?
Stagnant wages?
Hopeless housing market?
Open borders?
A new war in Libya?
Ongoing investigations of the CIA agents who worked to find Bin Laden?
Transparency?
Spying on citizens?
Trade deals?
Education?
Strength of the dollar?
Educate yourself a little.
The toxic unregulated derivatives which caused the financial melt-down were deliberately left unregulated by Clinton on the specific advice of Robert Rubin and Larry Summers.
If you have issues with something Bush did which Obama hasn't done, please feel free to list them.

Bush was weak, but Obama is a disaster.
I'm happy with my advanced degrees, thanks though!
Specifically, Bush came into office with a huge surplus, and a projection from the CBO that, if he kept Clinton's economic policies intact, we would erase the national debt in 10 years. As he famously said during the campaign, "I'm running against a record of peace and prosperity"
INSTEAD, Bush and his GOP big-spender cronies in Congress immediately issued a 1.2 TRILLION dollar tax break, the vast amount going to the very wealthy. THEN, he ignored "hair on fire" warnings, some fairly specific, from his CIA and NSA that Al Qeda was preparing to attack us.
THEN, he presided over the worst terrorist attack in US history, 3500 Americans killed on his watch.
THEN, in his anger and shame, Bush responded by going after... Saddam? He invaded the wrongcountry, an unneccesary struggle that cost the lives of 4,000 American troops, and an untold number of innocent Iraqis. AND, in order to pull this boner, Bush allowed bin Laden to escape at Tora Bora, by withdrawing our troops before the job was finished.
THEN, Bush appointed a horse show judge to be the head of FEMA, and watched helplessly as 1500 residents of New Orleans drowned.
THEN, Bush presided over the greatest collapse of our financial system since the Great Depression.
AND, all of his and his cohorts' crazy spending- 1.2 Trillion dollar tax cut for his rich buds, a three-trillion dollar war, a half-trillion dollar Medicare prescription program... ALL UNPAID FOR!!!
So yeah, it's gonna take Obama a while to clean up this mess- maybe he'll run out of time. We'll see. Like I've said, Obama relies on an informed electorate, the GOP relies on voter amnesia.
Sorry for the long post. I used complete sentences, instead of your goofy sentence fragments. But that's what being uneducated will get ya!
LOL, let see if I got this right, the economic collapse at the tail end of those 8 dismal years of Bush II are all Clinton's fault because Clinton didn't do something about the derivatives??? REALLY? Bush COULD have made that a priority, but didn't, so blame for the 2007-2008 banking collapse is Clinton's fault. BIZZARO WORLD.
This from someone that says Bush isn't to blame for the mess we are climbing out of today.
Bush had 6 years to rein in the bankers and he didn't. He went years with a GOP congress where he NEVER vetoed anything, yet, be could NOT fix this huge derivative problem Clinton didn't take action on.... laughable, but the really sad part is I think you were actually being serious..

One would think the AP would be EMBARRASSED to put out such an obviously defective poll, but they probably think that most people know nothing about polls and will NOT look at the internals.

The OP is the perfect example of this.
That AP "poll" consisted of 35% Democrats and 18% Republicans.
Just four days into May, Obama's approval rating has jumped, according to the New York Times: "In all, 57 percent said they now approved of the president's job performance, up from 46 percent last month."
Rasmussen has it at 48%. Still a few points higher than what it was, but its been higher and its dropping again. Obamas sinking faster than Osama!
Rasmussen is a terrible pollster. They had a 40% republican bias vs election night results in one race last year. On top of that they were one of the worst performing pollsters in 2010 showing results that were 4% more republican then the election night results.
