The way I see it, it is not a 'freedom of speech' issue. Rather, it is a private corporation (I assume so) in Canada that does not wish to alienate its viewers and advertisers. Hence, when that sportscaster tweeted his comment, the corporation felt that it had to fire him.
If the corporation had not fired him, many would have felt that the corporation 'adopted' the statement. The corporation did not want that.
I hate to see a person lose their job for simply uttering an opinion. However, if you are in the 'public eye' (as this person was) and work for a corporation, you better watch what you say.
Now that the Toronto sportscaster is unemployed he may, of course, say anything he wants.
I once worked for a small private store. The owner, my boss, easily weighed 400 pounds. I could have have told customers that my boss is 'fat as a fat cow, and that is fat' without fear of The Government taking action against me. However, my boss may have objected to the 'fat cow' part, and fired me.
I think that the people of the US should mind their own business and let other countries deal with their issues without butting in.
Why is it your/our/my business what happens in another country? It doesn't affect you/us/me.
If people minded their own business the world would be a much better place.
As I understand it, you are located in another country supporting the U.S. military. Does your stance not ring some sort of hypocritical bell in your head?
Well, freedom of speech is prohibited among heterosexual males in the West. They'll be labeled a bigot for saying anything tradition. What's this world coming to?
There are many people who support giving same-sex couples those exact same benefits, but still want to reserve the word "marriage" for opposite-sex couples.

That fat cow.
Agreed.
On another note, I don't think that the radio station realizes that this could damage them. First of all in the newly conservative Canada, secondly in the minds of the talent that they may want to attract in the future. This is a stand they probably should not have made.
Many many years ago, I had several dying AIDS patients and in each case, there was a dispute between the family members who were estranged and showed up unannounced at the bedside, and the partner who had been with the patient for years. Back then, there was nothing to really protect the partner's right to be there in place of the family, who had automatic precedence, because in at least two of the cases, the patient was already mentally incompetent and couldn't speak for himself. It was up to the nurses and doctors to try to referee this situation, and in our cases, the nurses and the doctors were on the side of the patient and his partner and we were able to steer the situation. But it might have been very different in a different region of the country. The experience impressed upon me the importance of homosexual unions having some legal recognition. This is no small matter even compared to things like shared assets and health insurance, because your last minutes on this earth can be pretty precious to your loved one and it can never be replaced once it's been robbed from you.
