Former NBA MVP and commentator Charles Barkley said that openly gay professional athletes would most likely be accepted by team mates based on their skills on the court, rather than their sexual orientation.
"If somebody is gay, that's their own business," he said on SiriusXM Radio Thursday. "But it bothers me how people try to say that jocks are not going to like a gay….I think gay people should be allowed to get married and God bless them, that's their own business. Listen, if a guy can't play, that's the only time we don't want to play with him. We don't care about all that extracurricular stuff."
Barkley was asked for his thoughts on gay athletes after New York Rangers star Sean Avery got involved in campaigning for marriage equality.
Barkley also suggested that the popular belief that almost all athletes are homophobic is unfounded. “First of all, every player has played with gay guys.” Barkley said. “It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play. ...
“Society discriminates against gay people,” he added. “They always try to make it like jocks discriminate against gay people. I’ve been a big proponent of gay marriage for a long time, because as a black person, I can’t be in for any form of discrimination at all.”
How do you feel about a coworker that you work closely with and to, if that coworker is known to commit what is deemed by society or yourself as immoral? I guess the key there is "you deem immoral". Idolater, Drug abuser, Beastiality believer, adulterer are all acts that don't really hurt other people like a thief or murderer. Ask yourself if you are comfortable with all these acts or being around people who are open participants in these acts. Most of us would cringe to have to work closely with one or more of these partaking people. But when it comes to homosexuality, it has been pushed down our throats so we now adjust and assimilate.

I don't see a problem working close to someone who is gay, that is there business not mine. If they start harassing me, that is different and is something that both gay and strait people have the capability of doing.

Except many believe sexual orientation is genetic and vastly different than choosing to be an idolator, drug abuser, etc.
I have never found working with gay co-workers to be a problem in any way. Truth is, in a work environment, sexuality really isn't something most people talk about so it just isn't an issue. As Barkley so rightly points out, competence and ability to do the job is far more important than sexual orientation.
