There is truth to your statement. However, it seems in order to keep the contractors and military flush with cash those of us who've worked our butts off for decades who are 54 and under can kiss much of the little benefit we paid into good by. I'm not looking forward living on the edge of poverty in a decade or so so a few can profit enormously.

Descriptors of "socialism":

Government providing education and health care to it's citizen's. Ooops!
Government assuming control of private enterprise. Oooops!
Government insulating private enterprise from failure. Oooooops!

Just a few of those pesky little items that have been used over time to describe those terrible "socialistic" countries by way of politicians convincing you that yours is a better "way".

There are probably many more that would apply but that's not the point. First it was those "royalists" then those "fascists" then those "commies" while all the time those "socialists" were up to no good and now it's those "terrorists".

it's getting harder all the time to pidgeonhole others while keeping yourselves out of the mix; why is it important in the first place?

it's easier to have an egalitarian mindset when you know your fellow man has the same value system as you do. here in america, people look at inner city gangbangers on welfare dealing drugs and dog-fighting and they think - uggh there's no way in hel this person has the same value system as me!

this is why you don't see the egalitarian mindset succeed in america.

fundamentally, there's nothing wrong or reprehensible about the egalitarian mindset. it's noble for sure, but it is vulnerable to abuse.

Are you saying that no such things happen in those countries?

Well that is the beauty of the conservative position. There aren't any free market paradises (except maybe authoritarian city states like Singapore). So they can criticize socialist states all they want without a liberal being able to point to a failed conservative state.

Aren't the majority of countries in Europe, many of which practice some form of socialism, part of the European Union?

European Commission » Internal Market &raquo Living and working in the Single Market

The principle of free movement of people dates back to the creation of the European Community. This principle was initially introduced to open Europe’s labour markets to migrant workers and their families. Over the years, this right was extended to cover all categories of citizens. Today, with the lifting of most internal border controls, we can move as freely around Europe as we can within a Member State. If we so choose, we can decide to study, work, or retire in another EU country. These freedoms embody the distinct advantages conferred by European citizenship.

No one that I voted for made it to Congress.
LOL..those items are what makes the socialist nations more stable, like it or not. The US does not have that. We promote diversity to the point we're at war with each other in the name of "tolerance". Isn't that the joke on us.

People have always found a way to fight others. Idiots ALWAYS find a reason to. The pilgrims, remember, weren't different from those who they ran away from in most aspects but probably just one. No?

You may have an issue with people speaking and using Spanish, more so in Texas (which also happens to be one of the very few states that has chosen not to make English its official language). But that is because you've chosen to have an issue. I can't speak Spanish, but why should I care about those who do? They are free to do so, in my world.

You call the borders issue laughable. Could you prove that by taking upon the task and getting your way into the USA as if it is really a cakewalk? I would LOVE to see that.

who the hel said that? i'm saying here in america, the extremes are more extreme. just as the income extremes here are wildly opposite and obvious, so are the personalities here. i wonder if there's a correlation. as far as citizens of sweden etc i would imagine the value systems of the citizens are pretty much identical whether you have above-average income, avg income or below-avg income. that's what i'm saying
