Do you think that China might have schoolchildren recite a Pledge of Allegiance to their government as well? What about Saudi Arabian children to their king? Do you feel that this is a practice that reflects the individual liberty of the citizens of the Untied States?
You are allowed your freedom of dissent and no one can force you to say it but why disallow it for everyone ? Where is your "tolerance" for those that do want to say it ? So just stand there quietly. It's not going to harm you to listen to it and even then you can tune it out.

In order to be against it a kid first needs to learn it and then understand what it means. K-12 is the learning ground. After that, they are on their own.

I would add in 99% of the GOP also, find me one candidate on the GOP side (besides Ron Paul) who understand the constitution? Neither side follows it.

Liberalism is dead, as the insanity of its core beliefs are starting to unwind. Obama has been helpful in this regard.
The creator of the pledge is singing in his grave over this thread. He was a devout socialist who created the pledge to indoctrinate the masses into pledging their allegiance to the state as opposed to liberty.

He did such a great job conservatives now call us socialists for not reciting a socialist pledge!

Oh the irony.

Jehovah's Witnesses view the pledge of allegiance the same as idolatry. I think they aren't far from the mark, in some instances. They've always been allowed to not say the pledge of allegiance. They weren't forced.

I didn't know that! That's funny.

With the inception of the teaparty and the Glenn Beck followers I've noticed a trend where some come awfully close to treating the founding fathers like Gods. To me, it comes across as right on the line of worship and idolatry. I find it nauseating. We can pay respect without turning things into Gods or idols.

I wish this was a joke, here is an early version of the pledge.

I don't think that I ever mentioned banning people from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; people can say whatever they want. Heck, I wouldn't have a problem with private schools reciting the pledge each morning.

I just think that legally mandating that schools have children mindlessly recite their allegiance to a government flies in the face of free thought. We're supposed to have a government for the people, not people for the government.

You act like the pledge of allegiance is literary ambrosia on the level of Proust or Joyce or Steinbeck. Its meaning is pretty simple: it means you pledge an unwavering faith in what the flag of the US stands for, namely what is outlined in the Constitution. Whoomp, there it is.
