With all that's going on in the world - I don't claim to know much about foreign policy but rather I'm just an average joe reading the paper here and there or watching the news - do you think WWIII is likely to happen in our lifetime? Say, within the next 30 years or so?

with the current power of todays weapons, and interconnections of economies I doubt it. The world will be full of smaller, low to medium intensity conflicts.

I thought about that. If WWIII were to happen, the entire planet's livelihood would be at stake! I'm still skeptical that it won't happen though. <shrug>

No, not likely. There would be to much at stake for all parties involved. Considering USA is not the super power it once was, WW3 would destroy the whole planet.

Of course WWIII is likely, especially when the world has re-entered the nationalisation era.
Because of the current credit crisis many nations will be forced to nationalise their banks in order to prevent a national (and therefore also a global) economic crisis.
The hawks in America will become even more paranoid than before and will consider every nation where the state controls the banks through a nationalisation process a socialist country.
And they have to start with America 1st where 70% of the banks already is under government control.

Besidez, it would not be the 1st time that the republicans have avoided an economic crisis by going to war so WWIII definitely is likely in this lifetime.
Gold, oil and weapons still are solid ways to investment your money and their prices would only skyrocket in a (global) war.

within the past few years we have seen once great enemy's rise again, and new ones emerge that fit the comparison of past enemy's (Iran and Nazi Germany) I do think it is inevitable if people do not start to learn from history. The alarms for WWII were abundant in the 40's, but people did not act on them until it was too late. The alarms are being rung again and many still choose not to see, nor act on them before it sucks the world into conflict.

well, the past two times there have been world wars, America was not involved with the initial start of war, and only joined in after everything went to hell in a hand basket, I would hope if something happens that we would be able to avoid it, or defiantly not be involved in its starting

Probably.

It would happen like this.

The Chinese Gambit: While the Chevron group (Chevron bought UNOCAL and BP bought Amoco) owns the rights to 75% of the oil, natural gas, and minerals in Central Asia, it is Russian, Chinese and French (Total) oil and gas companies that are getting the exploration and development contracts. As Chinese influence and control in the region expands, it isn't necessarily in the best interest of the Chinese to sell the oil, natural gas and minerals in US Dollars. This is even more so, since the goal of China is to create an Asian economic union, which would require a strong currency, like the Yuan to bring South Korea, Japan and Taiwan into the union. While oil production is currently only 1.5 Million barrels per day, within 20-25 years it will be 5-6 Million barrels per day. During the same period, US oil production will have declined by 2 Million barrels per day, wiping the 1 Million barrels per day that the US currently exports. The lower demand for US Dollars will cause its value to decline against other currencies, exasperating Cost Inflation in the US, making the prices of goods extremely expensive for Americans and life unbearable, eventually relegating the US to 2nd world status, but cheap for any country not using the US Dollar. The US will have to press its military advantage to gain control of Iran in order to be in a position to push troops into Central Asia to thwart Russian goals in that region, which could lead to an expanded military conflict.

The Russian Gambit: Russia has been successful in creating the 5 State Caspian Sea Treaty with Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. That could eventually expand further to include the states of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, possibly leading to a regional economic union. Like China, Russia of course will be selling that oil in Rubles and Euros, and not in US Dollars. The end result is the same. For the rest of the world to advance the quality of life and standard of living for their people, it will be necessary to force Americans to reduce their standard of living, and that is most easily accomplished by abandoning the US Dollar and switching to other currencies like the Euro, Ruble, Yuan or basket currencies. The only way to thwart that is for the US to control Central Asia, and ultimately force the break up of Russia and control the oil, natural gas and resource rich eastern Russian republics. That can only be done if the US has access to Central Asia, and currently it does not.
