Shocking new statistics released recently by the U.S. Census Bureau suggest that Americans may no longer need marriage. For the first time ever, fewer than half of the households in the United States are married couples. In the past decade, the number of unmarried couples increased 25 percent as more people chose to cohabitate. A Pew Research Center study last year put it more succinctly, finding an increasing number of Americans now believes marriage is "becoming obsolete."

With such a high divorce rate among the general population, I'm not surprised the least bit. Marriage nowadays has been reduced to legal long-term dating with financial benefits

So fewer than 50% of households are married couples...

What are the rest?

Hopefully procreation will become obsolete (or damn near so) in the near future, as well. Just another nasty human vice that people think far too much of. I'd like to see a rise in antinatalist philosophy in the future help bring about that change.

Several of my suburban neighbors are educated, single, childless, female professionals in their thirties. They own their homes and by all appearances are very successful. None of them have been married or are currently in serious relationships.

Welahlf or more marriages end in divorce too. I the distant past many marriages where common law also counted as married. Not sure what any of it means other than people can't seem to stay committed to anyone else more and more. But I wuld bet if women in the recent past had the options they do now many wold never have married their husband or would have dvoriced him.The old saying that a married woman is one divorce away form poverty is no log true.Read the other day that women now are the largest sex in numbers in college and article of black wmoman far out pacing their male counter parts in success.Seems the Dudes of the world are more and more matching what the origanal menaing of Dude was in the past.

Men are getting smarter. Why would a man get married if shes going to cheat on you, divorce you, then take half your stuff?
